Schwinn Varisity

I have a chance to pick up what looks to be from the pictures anyway a really nice 60's early 70's varsity for 75 bucks now this bike has friction shifters. I have never used them are they difficult to get used too? What should I look for when I go to eyeball this bike? Are parts relatively easy to come by for these and can they be outfitted with fenders for commuting and such. Its Campus Green and it looks like the chrome is in good shape. Thanks

Number one, watch out for steel wheels. Friction shifters can be gotten used to quite easily. It took me all of two, three minutes. If it's the one on CL, it looks pretty clean.

I don't know about fender fittings, but I'll bet someone else does . Are you going to use it for the Tour de Pierce?

Depends on what kind of shape its in whether I use it for the TDP. I really like my Raleigh but if this thing doesn't need much more than a tune up I might just do that.

If the bikes in great shape with little to no rust $75 is reasonable but why not start at $50? Varsitys have plenty of clearance for fenders and the eyelets to make them work. Chrome fenders were an option and can still be found on ebay. Another option might be the Planet Bike Freddy Fenders. I believe they make a black version that would probably look nice with Campus Green. Best of luck.
