World Sport Road Tires

Brand new to the site. I asked this in the "Introductions" forum, but I'll put it here as well. Just got a World Sport yesterday for $25! Everything works and she rides great. Rode for 3 hours last night. Tires look a bit like alligator skin though. Not knowing brands yet, what would be the best replacement tire for the least money? (Yes, I'm a cheapskate.) Thanks!

Usually Nashbar will offer good prices, but do you want gumwalls, or are you willing to settle for plain old black tyres?

DO you know what size your tires are? 27 1 1/4 or 700c? It should say somewhere on the tire itself.

Wondering where you are located ..... Cleveland area by chance? Called on a $25.00 World Sport on CL yesterday and it was already gone. The tires are going to be the 27 x 1 1/4 -- Get something good, that will run you maybe $15.00 or so per tire and not something from Wal-Mart or Drug Mart. If you are in the NE Ohio area, I believe that the local shop called Spin has some good tires of that size in stock. I also took a quick look and Nashbar (bikenashbar.com) has Continental Ultra Sports in that size for $12.99 each.

I am cheap too. If a $10.00 tire lasts 2 months and a $20.00 tire lasts 2 years which is the better deal?

Worls Sport Tire Info

Thanks for the tire info. Can I assume that the gum walls are the yellowish sidewalls? That's what it has now. Are they any different than regular black tires except for appearance? I was looking at the continentals on nashbar too. Sonatageek - I think we were looking at the same bike, got it in Parma, Saturday about 7pm. Cleaned it up this morning and it only took an hour of fun work to make a huge difference. Rode it a lot more today. Probably saved 5 bucks in gas already. I think I'm obsessed with the stupid thing.

Yes, gumwalls are the yellowish sidewalls. I don't think there's any performance difference, but the gumwalls are the 'classic' tyre for vintage bikes, so many of us continue to use them. A bit like using plain black sidewalls on a Duesenberg, you know?

I have two older Schwinns and use Continental Ultra Sports on both (from Nashbar). Seem to be holding up well and were a big improvement over the "Schwinn Approved" tires that were on them. I believe Nashbar has them on sale right now for 12.99 and you can probably dig up a 10% off coupon code in the Coupon Forum.

I liked the Continentals when I had 27" wheels, the Sport 1000 was their inexpensive model but I think it was discontinued.

Alfred E. Bike (aebike.com) has Panaracer Pasela Tourguards for $17.99 each. That's a pretty darn good deal. Or if you are super sneaky, harris has a specials page that has Avocet FasGrip Time Trial tires for 27" here. Depends on what kind of riding you'd be doing.

Congratulations on the bike! I picked up my World Sport, a 1990 model, this spring for just $45. I have been very happy with it. It had some nice Bontrager tires, but after two flat tires in Brooklyn in one week, I got the Schwalbe HS159 Puncture Protection 27x1-1/4 from Biketiresdirect for $14.95 each. They are very heavy, but no more flats, and they are great-looking with gumwalls. Still, I would recommend these only if you are going to be riding through some nasty streets.

World Sport Road tires

Wow, I now have all the tire info I need. Jonmiles - I do ride through some bad areas so I may go with your choice. Plus I was born in Brooklyn so we must have some type of connection. East Hill - I'll go with the gumwalls to match the whitewalls on my Duesenberg.

At least the gumwalls are cheaper to obtain than the whitewalls for the Dusie .

World Sport Road tires

Thought I should give my local shop a chance before I go the Nashbar or Performance Bike route. They have Cheng (sp?) gumwall tires for $12.99. The owner says these outsell others by 3-1. Does Cheng make a good tire? Thanks!

They outsell 3-1 because they probably don't sell another tire in that size. Or because people are cheap by nature. Am I right? I am too, unless it's a really special bike. They are a basic "holds air" type tire. They have a cushy ride though no flat protection at all. Get some thorn proof tubes if you plan to use the Cheng shins on bad streets. Overall I think something a little tougher might serve you better.,,,,BD

I like serfas blackwalls on some bikes? flat protection, plus a neutral black look. I like gumwalls/skinwalls more though....

IRC Roadwinners. If I knew the bike would sell that fast I would've kept them.

World Sport Road Tires

Thanks Bikedued. I think I'll go with one of the better tires you folks recommended from nashbar or performance. I am cheap, but tires matter.

Don't get me wrong, I have them on 2-3 of my bikes myself. But I also use entirely different tires to ride to work, than to tool around my neighborhood.,,,,BD

Just a point, yesterday the Performance website was offering basically "free" shipping (well, 25 cents), for orders over $25, maybe in response to the recent Nashbar free shipping promotion. Free shipping on low cost orders can be a major savings!
