Where do you find them?
1 Attachment(s)
Hello All:
As the supply of vintage replacement(orginal) parts run out,how do you keep, your vintage bike, orginal? Or do you just, put new parts on it,and keep riding it. I find that the supply of wheels, for vintage, Schwinn, with 7 speed freewheels, are getting hard to find. Since the makers, have all gone to 8,9,10 speed. And 5 speed freewheels, are harder to find than hens teeth:) :) So do you just buy, vintage bikes that are trashed, or in the dumpster, and stockpile the parts? |
I never seem to have trouble finding early parts. I buy when I find and stock pile them. Many people here in southern Wisconsin just dump old parts because they have updated or bought a new bike. Places include resale stores, flea markets, swap meets, antique stores etc. To quote an old TV show the key is "patience Grasshopper". Roger

ebay is your friend.

I work at a local bike thrift shop. If you are looking for old parts let me know. We have a box of 5,6,7 speed freewheels and a whole lot of other stuff. Frankly, I'm getting kinda sick of it all.;)

Same here :D - I've a garage full of crap. I just replace with whatever works, and don't fret too much over original unless it it a special bike. In that case, it's off to eBay or else wheeling-dealing with you pirates. :D I've found the opposite of you - with the advent of 8/9/10 speed drive-trains, vintage stuff is kicked to the curb just about everywhere and practically free. Again, with the obvious exception of the special ones. Every now and then I get pinched for good wheel-sets, but they always seem to turn up eventually. Most of the parts I have I stripped off of wrecked bikes, or inherited from other folks that were sick of tripping over them. |
