Interesting Cinelli story
I had a friend over to dinner last night, bicycles came up because my son is interested in learning how to work on them. Eventually it came around to old Campagnolo parts and my friend says, "oh, I have an old bike with all Campagnolo." I said what is it.
She says, "Cinelli. I was in Italy in the 70s and I had heard the name and wanted to buy a bike, so I found out where they were and went by. Fortunately, I went by the bank and got $400. cash in Lire before I went. I got there and met Mr. Cinelli himself. As he was just completing a big order for the Italian National team, he said he had no bikes to sell. I pleaded that I had come a long way, and dreamed of owning one of his bikes. He said he might have one extra, and came back with a bike exactly my size. But then he says, 'You can only have it if you can pay me $200. cash on the spot,' thinking I wouldn't have any money. He was shocked when I pulled out the cash from my pocket to pay him. I rode the bike everywhere, including across the country and back, I still have it, stored at my mother's house." I told her its probably worth quite a bit now. |
Nice story. I think I heard a similar story on the CR list, maybe it is the same person. Either way, nice story. And yes, it is probably worth a bit more than $200 now :) .

One of the first bikes I bought in last year's biking rebirth was a real nice chrome Ross Mt Whitney. When I showed a lady friend a photo of it she said she used to work in a bike shop and had a Ross too. I told her she should send me a photo of it sometime.
When she finally did it was a chrome Mt Whitney just like mine but in mint condition and in a size that fit me better... and it was for sale! SOLD! That's it in my sig below. No idea why she didn't tell me she had a bike just like mine in the first place. You just never know. :) |
