Free Paramount

Got your attention, eh? :D

So - this morning I go down to the cafeteria for my usual cup of coffee. As I exit the building, I pass by the bike rack just like I do every morning. And just like I do every morning, I scan the rack and look over the bikes. Just a habit - can't help myself.

As my eyes scan over all the familiar bikes and hit the end of the rack, I spy a bike I haven't seen before. A nice blue Schwinn Paramount. It looks to be a newer one, and is trimmed in full Dura Ace 9 speed and Speedpaly pedals, and the owner even left his helmet and shoes hanging on the bike (a nice pair of Sidi Genus 5's).

As I take in all the detail, I do a double-take.... something's wong. Then it hits me - there's no lock!!! Now, there's not a lot of crime around town, and that's why I like living here. But no lock on an unattended Paramount is just........ wrong.

WOW!!!!

I hope somebody was able to page them for you or something ??

Crazy thing is that it sounds like this person knows bikes and gear...

At the bottom of a dark, dark hole.

AS for a ride, let's do it! I'm out of town this weekend, but I may be available on the 4th and am doing Palomares with Carl on the 8th. Wanna come along?

You should have guarded it, then again it might have been a sting.

Well, I went for my noon ride, and it was there when I left. When I got back, it was gone - but there is a pair of black loafers where the bike used to be.

As for guarding it or paging for the owner - naw. He presumably knows what he has, and knows the risk involved with leaving it there. Besides, nobody around here complains if you take your bike up to your cube once in a while. I figure he's either lazy or isn't concerned, and since it's his bike and his descision who am I to get after him? Or - maybe is was a sting.......

There's also a Mongoose commuter bike that is in the rack almost every day - racks, mirror, bell, the works. It has key lock on it......... and the owner uses a big ol' boot lace instead of a cable. I kid you not.

Don't give me heart failure with those type of post headlines.

So long as it wasn't a pre-1980 machine! *devil*

Take care,

-Kurt

One time when I was working in downtown Minneapolis and parking my bike (nice vintage trek, not a paramount but my favorite bike) in a really busy area, I came down at the end of the day I reached in my bag for my gloves and felt my lock! I twas still sitting there after nine hours unlocked. I guess not many people (even thieves) expect to see a beautiful bike without a lock and most likely no one noticed.

Well, my Paramount has never had a lock on it--- but then it has never been out of my sight if it's outside of the house--- until today. I left it in my office at the church a few hours ago after a hot 90F ride. Now I'm nervous. I'll probably go fetch it right after dinner.:o

You should have left a note. Something like; If you didn't see this note being left your bike could have been stolen.

KrisPistofferson 06-27-07 08:11 PM

I would have taken it for safekeeping.
