Large Mixte sought

I'm looking for the largest-framed mixte available. I know a tall woman who could probably ride a 24 inch regular-framed bike. She contends that all of the production mixte frames were too small for her. What's the largest one you've ever seen? Did any particular manufacturer make a big one? Are they so rare that I'll never find one that big?

I'm hoping someone will say Fuji or Miyata made a really tall one because I've seen some 27.5-inch mens frames from them.

Looks like Rivendell offers one in 60 cm. And only $1500 for the frameset!!!!

I have a silver Schwinn LeTour mixte frameset which is absolutely gargantuan - 23" from BB to top of seat tube, plus 27" wheels and more then ample fender clearance. Big machine.

And it's available... ;)

Convert inches to centimeters and talk in those.
A 24 inch frame is about 60 centimeters.
I've seen some larger ones, as in larger I mean not the bare-minimum head tube.
I didn't measure it, but one Raleigh could have been a 57 cm frame.

I've got a NOS Legnano mixte frame that is pretty big, and I've never gotten around to building it up. Want I should go measure it?

I recently picked up a 59cm Gitane mixte from a fellow bf member. It is really tall and fits me well(six one male). I'm glad to see people offering stuff for sale because this one is absolutely not! Because I love it! Mixtes are the best grocery bikes and every guy should have one :) I wanted one for myself since I built up one for my wife, and now I'm hooked.

Sorry I can't help, but at least you know they are out there.

Most mixte frame were about 19". Miyata did offer a 22" but that's the largest that I'm aware of from them. The problem is that the market for a mixte frame this large is very small. Even if you find one the right size, it will probably be a an entry level model.

This Mixte bike I have is too big for me (I'm 5'6") but I don't know how to measure it- Can you school me?

Measure from the center of the crank, up the seat tube, to the top of the seat tube.

btw, why do you think it's too big?

I know where a Le Tour Mixte is? Not sure how complete it is, or if it's even still there. It's pretty large though. I ride 24-25 inch, and it looked about my size or bigger.,,,,BD

From the center of the BB to the top of the seat tube.

Largest mixte I've come across was a Peugeot that I flipped on CL last year. My sister bought it for me at a garage sale for $10. IIRC it had a 22'' frame and an ATAX stem that was unusually long for a womans bike. A guy from Berkeley bought it for his tall girlfriend.

21-1/2". Not as big as I thought, but bigger than usual.

Cool. Some of the women on www.mplsbikelove.com are really interested in this post.

EvilAntiMartha 06-29-07 02:53 PM

Yep, I'd be one of the women. :)

I'm 5'10" and usually ride a 57 or 58cm bike. I'm, looking for a women's bike for some shorter bar hops and to cruise around in a skirt a little easier. Besides, it sounds like a great excuse to get another bike!

One think I'm wondering about mixtes. In my (limited) experience, I could find a tall enough mixte, but the trouble was in the length from seatpost to head tube (ie, top tube length). That always seemed a touch short. Is this normal?

I'll try to measure my Masi this eve to get a feel for how long the top tube is one that.

Good question. A great deal of mixtes that I come across are set up with flat bars for a more upright "in town" kind if riding, so maybe that's why? For additional top tube length, I can't imagine it being an insurmaountable issue with the proper stem. But it would be interesting to see the top tube measurement on your Masi as compared to a mixte frame of similar size.

You know, it's odd, but I always feel more stretched out on the mixtes than I do on the traditional diamond frames.

Perhaps because I can ride what is a 'medium' size frame in a mixte, versus having to ride a 'small' traditional diamond frame bike?

I currently own three mixtes, have had as many as five at one time :D .

hmmmm... I find that when I'm riding a bike a bit smaller than usual which has drops, I'm ok riding on the top of the hoods, but can't get comfortable with my hands low on the drop bars.

That said, when I set up my future mixte, I'm thinking of going with some sorta mustache bar. I'd like a bit of drop, so I'm leaning towards flipping a pair of old 3 speed bars over. Also, I'd like to make it a fixed. Anyone had any issues with making a mixte, er, fixte?

:)

It's been done. Dirtdrop, was it you?

Grand Bois 07-03-07 08:51 AM

I've never built a fixie, and I probably never will.

I built my wife a single speed mixte on tubulars. She hated that bike. She didn't like the color and it made a funny noise that only she could hear. I sold the frame at the swap in El Sobrante and used the parts to build my Carlton.

I copied dirtdrop!:p Except I made mine a 7 speed internal hub w/ coaster brake for the wife. She really likes it!
