27 inch tire question..not all tires created equal

I recently scrounged up an old Centurion frame that I built up as a commuter bike. I used a really nice custom 27" pair of wheels with Sun CR18 rims with that I built a few years ago. I think the frame is really made for 700C, because the 27"ers barely fit in under my fenders. At first I mounted a pair of 27 x 1 1/8 Panaracer Pasela Tourgards and those fit under the fenders just fine. But those tires were old, so I bought a pair of Continental Ultrasports, also 27 x 1 1/8, but those tires are noticably wider and the rear tire rubs my fender, so I either need to get a new pair of Paselas or something else thats at least as narrow. I could jump down to a 27 x 1" tire, but I think my rims are too wide for those. Anyone know if you can mount a 1" tire on a Sun CR18 rim? I'd rather find something on the narrower side in the 1 1/8" range. Any suggestions other than another pair of Panaracer Pasela's. What else is narrow?

I can't offer personal experience about a 1" tire on the CR18 rim but if 1 1/8 fits then 1" should be fine. Go to a shop that sells 27X1 tires and ask them to mount a tire, if it fits buy it, if it doesn't they should only charge a few bucks (or nothing) for the try-on.

HMMM..those look nice and the price is right. If you have a calipers, would you mind measuring the actual width of the tire for me?? I need something less than 26mm wide. Anything wider will rub my fenders.

My guess is that if your rim is less than 26mm the tire will be. The rim these are on is an Alex Rim from Nashbar that is very wide (guess 30 mm?). But the tire is very plyable, in fact I wondered if it would stay on. But as soon as I pumped they held and I now run them between 90-100 psi. 1 & 1/8" equates to 28.5 mm, but most vintage rims I have that are rated for this size tire probably run about 22-24 mm.

According to this site the CR18 is already a narrow rim at 22.5 OD, narrower than any 27" rim I have. The closest I could come is a 23mm rim with 1" Conti Sport 1000s that measure 25mm inflated.

I would say any 1" tire would fit your needs if those rims really are that narrow.

I had a chance to measure: The Alex Rim is 26mm wide and the Vittoria tire is 26 mm wide. And my other rims are 22mm wide. I agree with McDave, you could run 1" tires on the Sun CR18s. I plan to on my next set of wheels.

I once had a pair of those (27 x 1 1/8) but I only got about 1000 miles out of them. But for $10 thats not really that bad.

I have 1" Panaracer Pasela Tourguards on my PX10. They're too skinny for me. (or maybe I'm too fat for them)

How did they show their wear?

The River ride was pretty rough but they stood up to it. I thought that it would be more bike path than tough road conditions but no...

I probably would have put a little fatter tire on had I known.

I'm just getting used to thin tires.

Well by bike came with 27 X 1" tires front and rear, the front rim is a 27 X 1 1/8", and the rear is 27 X 1 1/4.
But it rides fine so oh well.

Wear was not the issue. The tires began developing bulges around all of the minor cuts and they began to flat very frequently.

Your Centurion was NOT designed for 700s,. Fenders for 700s will fit 27s.. sometimes, depends on the tire as you found out. A big variation in 27" tires, case by case.. AND your rims WILL be fine for ANYTHING from 7/8 to 1 1/4, 'cause that's what Centurians, those Arayas will accept. Certainly Suns will too,all alum. rims will in 27", the hybrid rims. designed for 32-38 and the steel ones that came on many Shwinns and some Giant road bikes and others won't take 7/8 so well.

I went ahead and ordered a pair of those...Forte 27x1's. I got them last week and mounted one on my Sun CR18 rim and then promptly returned them. The pair I got are scary narrow...way narrower than my rim and definately not even close to 1 inch wide. They measured to about 0.7 inches wide. I expect some variation in tire width but a 0.7" wide tire is way too far out of proportion to call it a 27x1 in my opinion.

This seems to be a trend. I have a 700Cx28 set of Continentals on my Bianchi, which has only enough frame clearance for true 700Cx25 tires. Someone suggested undersizing of tires as a technique for reducing advertised weight.
