Ok, it's not a touring bike ... yet! It's a 1985 mountain bike with a lugged chrome moly 23" frame and 26" wheels. I had been look for something like this for a while, then I just stumbled over this one at a great price. The more I look at these older MTBs, the more they impress me! This one will be getting a complete make-over very soon.

So recently I built up this as my city/dirt/light touring bike.

Older mtbs make great touring conversions. I had a front rack on there but didn't like it so I removed it. It wasn't right for the bike. I've also since added a black Brooks Flyer.
Good luck with your build!

Thanks
Pretty well nothing original on it. It was a parts bin build. I have been collecting parts for the build for the past 6 months or so. 8 Speed wheels and rack off a Kona Cinder Cone, Deore XT 8 spd RD off a Norco, Exage 300LX FD and crank off an unknown, tektro canti's and levers that came off my Surly when I swapped out to v-brakes, stem and bar ends from a parts bike I flipped, and Bar is a Sakae/Molodo bar off a Torelli Corsca Strada Parts bike (selling frame). I wanted to keep it cheap until I found out if I liked it or not, only thing I bought new was the tires and cables/housings.
I'm in love with it so far, just as it is. Would like to get mustache bars or dirt drops in the future, and a front rack like the pass hunter from VO, but for now I'm liking it just fine

Ack - this is so cool. I love it. I just missed out on a bargain-priced Series IV specified as 'large frame'. I can only hope it wasn't large enough.

Still working on adding a classic chrome frame pump, some sort of generator lighting, and a proper set of bags.

My Univega Gran Turismo, mid 1980s, with lots of French parts: Simplex derailleurs, shifters; Stronglight crank; front rack and bag; Mavic clincher rims; Mafac brake levers. Original Dia-compe cantis and super nice Challenge Parigi Roubaix tires. VO fenders.

A Specialized Expedition I just picked up last weekend. Not sure what year, or how much is original on it (the seller thought the saddle might be).
I'm excited to turn it into my dedicated tourer, with front and rear racks and bar-end shifters.

Sweet C'Dale fiataccompli! I reverse-inherited a 1990 ST400 from my son that looks the same as yours. At first it seemed like it had kind of a non-descript ride but now I'm loving the bike a lot. It seems more responsive than other touring bikes with a lighter feel and I'm anxious to try it loaded.
