Westpoint Bikes??!
 

Around here I snagged a 24" and a 26" Yellow westpoint bike 'set'. They apperently were sold at TrueValue as thats what their headbadges say. They are both Star-10's. I noticed another model for sale: Contender10. Anyone know who makes these? They have the ****** bottom bracket that Huffies do.

They sound fairly low end, but...photos always help!

The photo confirms East Hill's diagnosis: the unlugged frame, folded sheet steel stem, stamped rear dropouts, smashed-tubing front dropouts (is there an official name for this?), plastic stem shifters, forged steel s-crank, steel rims, and leopard print flipflops all say "1979 Bike Boom Cheapo." On the other hand, it has a certain panache. Tune, add brakes with Salmon Kool-Stop pads, add derailleurs if desired, and ride with pride. Saddle is optional.

Glad I got these for free! I'm also wondering how much I can offer hapless sellers for their huffy bikes...I dont dare pay more than $10 :-\ even if its a simple fix like a "spilled pop into headset" I cant really turn around and make much, but I do love selling used bikes as they obviously are superior - steel frames and decent shimano parts should hold up better than walmart crapoly! I should note that I destroyed a crank on my Trek 800 Sport, along with the seat and seatpost.

But there is that panache AND there is matching leopard print on the chair(?), so it's all good :) . Flipping bikes at that low price point could be difficult, so free is certainly the way to go.

I believe the Cotter Company made these for a short time. I had a black & Gold one in the mid '70's. It was a Destiny/Westpoint bike. If I remember it was a 12 spd. bike.

Just wanted to let you know (as I did the same type thing)...this is a 7 year old thread...

First new bike to cross my path in life was a gold Westpoint banana bike, aka "Sting Ray" which, like Kleenex, became the term for those, in my world.
Yes, it came from Mitchell's True Value Hardware, which will still sell you things that Walmart won't. $44.00 original price. The Dairyland Dare passes by the store.

I'll bet the OP is still trying to sell the bike though.
