Nice looking bike, Chris. According to the Classic Rendezvous site, the Weinmann Carrera brakes were their attempt to do a Campy knockoff, so I imagine they were a level up from the 605. I see from Bob Hufford's Schwinn data book, that the Carrera was the stock brake on the 1976 Paramount P13 though a Campy option was offered: http://www.geocities.com/sldatabook/detail7579.html.

Here is my 605, missing the acorn nut. The finish on the Carrera is anodized and the quick release is of better design.
This was on my 79 Raleigh Competition when I bought it as frame with some misc. parts attached. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...a/90c17a58.jpg |

There are a couple versions of Weinmann concave rims. Yours would have been the A124's which are the narrower version of them. I'm a little surprised that they put a Nuovo Gran Sport rear derailleur on it. |

FWIW, I checked my serial number and found out my bike was manufactured in 1977. Browsing through the Raleigh catalogs, it seems like they did offer the Carrera as OEM on the Comp GS in '77, but downgraded in later years. |
Thanks for the info guys.

Are you sure that your Competition is a 1979? I have a 1979 Competition with Campagnolo components, Weinmann brakes and rims. Made in England. No Japanese components at all.

Raleigh Competition GS
I bought, and still have, a Raleigh Competition GS that I purchased brand new in 1980. I still have all of the original parts, although I've upgrades some items. I came upon the forum because I was contemplating selling it (that's not meant to be a sales pitch...I'll save that for eBay) and I wanted to look at other people's bikes to see it any were just like mine, and to get an idea of what it might be worth. But, for the moment, forget all of that. I am responding because maybe I can at least tell you what was on my 1980 model and that may help you in restoring the one you have. I'll warn you that I don't spend much time on forums but the Raleigh Competition has sentimental value to me so I'm interested in the subject of your conversation...don't mean to intrude though so, if I am tell me to bug off and I will drop out of the conversation. I don't know how to add images from my computer on here or I would post some pics of it that (coincidentally) I took just today. Let me know if I can help in any way.

honda_f3cbr, your frame is wrecked. The top tube is bent and the fork as well (can't tell if its bent at the steer tube or at the fork blades). I would part it out - nobody will buy the frame (and if they do, they'll be banging your door down later once they realize it is bent), though if the fork is bent at the blades and not the steerer, someone might be willing to straighten it and use it on another frame.

This thread is over a year old.... but still would be curious to see pics of your competition ibrkwnd. You can post pictures by first uploading them to a site like flickr.com and then embedding them into the message by clicking on the "insert image" icon in the tool bar.
Kurt, I had a competition that was bent in the same way that you pointed out. It is funny how I could not see the damage for the life of me, and now it just screams out at me. |

I just gave away some headlights that was on my old 2001 GSX R1000 to somebody. They were sitting in my garage doing nothing, they needed them and they got them. Most likely this thread is well dead. Just registered to post in a reply.. Good peddling. BTW, I see you posted an email, will hit that too. :) Pic of my Raleigh Competition GS (made in England) http://www.cehoward.net/raleigh2.jpg |
My frame has the same fork-ends and drop-outs does that make it Japanese also?
What other company provided dropouts or forkends for the Competition besides Campy and Suntour |

I am newbie, so don't take my take as gospel. But, I think all the way up to 1979, all the Competition GS were made in England. After that, they shifted elsewhere, Japan?? |
[QUOTE=cehowardGS;11572701]This really is an old thread. :)
Sorry :-/ |

Haven't read any of the threads in awhile but am finally getting around to adding some pics of my 1980 Raleigh Competition GS (attached). I am not a purist so I committed the heinous crime of repainting, polishing aluminum, and upgrading parts in the 30+ years that I've had this wonderful bike. Sadly, I had many original parts until an impending move to a new home made me decide to clean house and I gave them away to the guy who packed my moving truck: original wheels, brakes, etc. Had I been thinking I would have gladly given them to anyone who patronizes this thread. Ah, well...sorry to all. I have a few more pics that I will add later but this it for now. To my knowledge, 1980 was the last year that the bike was actually manufactured by Raleigh in England. I enjoy reading your comments the bikes!

Oops! The first two pics of the black Raleigh were uploaded by accident. I had saved them because that was the original color of my bike (now yellow) and thought that this guy's bike was a wonderful example of the the bike as I remember mine when I bought it brand new. Sorry about the posting of these two pics.
