Help with Mercian Campanolo rebuild

Hi all,

I am rebuilding a 1984 Mercian Olympic with Campagnolo kit. The frame is almost mint 531 with a 68mm bottom bracket and a 126.5mm OLN at the back.

I am hoping to use a Record crankset and 126.5mm Record rear hub. Can anyone tell me the correct size BB to use to get the correct chainline? Can I use a 7sp freewheel and if so will an 11-28 be tolerated by the Super Record rear derailleur.

Following an earlier thread on of the forums I am tempted to try and use Simplex retrofriction levers. My bike has no down tube shifter braze ons and I was wondering if anybody had an appropriate band to sell, either campag or simplex appropriate to the mid 80s.

Can I use any modern cabling on this bikes brakes and gears? I am getting an SR derailleur for the front and C-Record aero levers with SR brakes.

Slowly finding my feet in the world of classic bikes and any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Stephen

I think the correct spindle size is 118 mm. Cyclotoine knows quite a bit about this (more than I do), and I'm certain there are others here as well.

Modern cabling (you don't need to spend extra to get the STI compatible cabling), works fine with older components.

84? Surely that would be a freewheel, rather than a cassette? As far as what to use, it depends on your intended use. Want to time trial on the flat - use a corncob. Want to climb mountains with lots of gear - use the widest range you can find. I would base my choice on what I currently found good for the sort of riding I wanted to do.

I have several 79-81 bikes that are cassette, and four of them are Huffy Aerowinds. Wouldn't a Mercian have a cassette? It only seems fitting.,,,,BD
