Look what I broke
Ok it was bent so when I stripped the bike this was pinching the cable and broke off when I tried to bend it back. Is there a clamp on stop or guide or whatever this thing is called I can use instead? http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/100_0999.jpg

SunTour and Shimano both make/made downtube stops that you can still find for a reasonable price.

Should still work ok with just the back half...

How about thread the wire through a small washer before you thread it through the guide? That should keep the housing from pulling through the guide. It's a bit of a bodge, but would probably work until you find a real solution.....

Great tips thanks. I'll turn something up on the lathe that I think will work

Not really. The stop is broken off. But, there are quickie work-arounds to try while you look for a permanent solution. You just need something to stop the cable housing from pulling through so the derailleur can shift. One simple way would be to wrap electrical tape (or some other kind) about 1/8" thick around the cable housing just large enough so that it can't pull up through the hole. Or some kind of clip maybe. It's the stop that's missing, not the guide, so you just need a way to stop the cable housing. Maybe a twist of heavy gage wire around the housing at that point.

actually a ziptie would work... I was looking through some junk bikes once where I noticed that some of the department store bikes didn't have stops on the bike at all... they used zip ties interestingly enough...
