panasonic dx 5000
 

i bought one of the lugged tange prestige dx 5000s recently, and it is just amazing! the bicycle feels so springy and smooth, yet stiff when it comes to accelerating. the shimano 600 7 speed groupset is also in great shape, and the bike looks so unique as a whole. i am just happy to be riding this amazing japanese steel bicycle!

One of may favorite 'inexpensive' bikes of all time. I wish I still had mine. It's the only bike I've regretted selling.

That was a top of the line Panasonic Bicycle. I'm so envious. I've been looking for a nice one for years.

Does it have the original owners name painted on the top tube back towards the seat? They had a custom paint to order system on those bikes.

the bicycle is top of the line, its weight must be 21 to 22 pounds and it rides like a crotch rocket! there is so much power in the bike, it just rumbles underneath me. pics will come soon, i have to take some nice close ups to show how clean it is!

and there is no custom pics paint job, it is black and has orange yellow and green highlights. the lugs make it flexible as all get out, and it is so thin that the top tube sounds like a beer can when i tap it. the tube walls were drawn out to .5 or .4 mm, wow!

Nice! Tange prestige is excellent tubing. Congrats and +1 on pictures.

I have a DX2000. Probably Tange 900 tubing, poor mitering in the BB and it seems the head tube was copper brazed. Nevertheless I love it! :D

Great find - I love mine. Fast and very comfortable. I get a bit of frame-flex induced shifting when out of the saddle and cranking hard uphill, though.

I took the pink Panasonic and DX-5000 lettering off the tubes - it made a major improvement in the look. It has a Brooks saddle and different tires at the moment, but here's a picture of what it looks like otherwise: http://www.countrybicycle.com/images...20sideview.jpg

I just got back from a ride where I had a little mishap - came around a turn too fast for the patch of gravel. that had washed into the road following a downpour yesterday and ended up flying off the road. I didn't go down but the rear rim is bent.

...when did they pull out of the US?---the Panasonic custom order frames and amazing paint job options are still available in Japan :)

1989 was the last year in the US for Panasonic. The reasons were twofold. First, Japanese bicycles got very expensive after the 1985 yen re-evaluation. Secondly, the ratio of profit margin to required warehouse space was very low for bicycles compared to other product lines, so it was decided that the warehouse space would be better utilized by dropping the bicycle line.

wow, thanks for the info. i think that mine is an eighty nine because of the serial number, but the seven speed 600 cassette makes me think otherwise. hey, pictures are coming later today, hooray!!!
