I purchased this '72 Campus Green Schwinn Paramount off the 'bay earlier this year and made a few modifications recently....put new tubulars on it yesterday and changed out that piece of crap Campy Gran Turismo rear derailleur for a Campy Rally.....

It is a 26" frame with full original Campy(except r/d and tires).....there are a few small touch-ups on the frame but hard to notice unless you're up close.....it rides and shifts beautifully and I'd love to bring it to some vintage shows and take it on a few vintage rides sometime......

Wow, that is really nice. It is a size I could ride and the Touring Paramount is the one Paramount I am missing from my own collection.

Your Paramount is a real beauty. An absolute delight to behold. I'm glad I could inspire. Some Sundays I like to think I can do something similar from the pulpit. :rolleyes:

The Rallys are real beauties of a touring RD. I have no complaints about mine. It's a shame they are so hard to find, and thus go so high on ebay. I waded in on one last week but bowed out when it went above $90. It was in Sweden and eventually closed around $130 plus the shipping.

I am 6'7", so this bike isn't a wall hanger....fits me perfect. I'd waited for a lonnng time for one this size to show up on Ebay....this one came from a seller in Chicago and he wouldn't ship it! I have a friend that happens to live a few blocks from where this one was .... so he told me to bid on it and he'd pick it up for me..... Well, it worked out perfectly as my friend is a "bike guy" and he carefully took it apart and packed it up nicely.....I held my breath as this thing made its way to me via UPS, but it arrived unscathed! I took it home, cleaned each part as I unwrapped it and carefully re-assembled it in my garage.

It had the original(I believe)tubular tires on it so I replaced them with those 3 for $50.00 Servizo Course tires that Yellow Jersey sells.....then I just got that Rally der. from Ebay and put it on Saturday.

Paid a little over $1500.00 for the bike, $50.00 for the tires and $80.00 for the Rally......actually my wife gave me the "go ahead" to get the bike for my birthday/fathers day/anniversary gift back in June of this year.....It is a joy to just walk by the bike every day in my garage, let alone actually ride the thing.....

Since I can post pics now, some better detailed ones will follow....

I agree with the campus green comments.....that has always been one of my very favorite Schwinn colors....along with radiant coppertone. I still have Bob's '66 Paramount as my desktop background....I feel very blessed to have this particular bike, believe me!

I bought a small vial of campus green touch-up paint from Pete's.....it "sort of" matches, but you can still see where the spots are...

Do you get to ride in the area in the background of your photos? That would be a perfect place to ride your Paramount.

The pics were taken in my driveway. I live in a nice little developement just outside the Williamsport city limits......very quiet and semi-secluded. It's a circular style developement that is exactly one mile around.....My wife and I walk two laps almost every night when the weather permits us....but we rarely bike it. We have LOTS of nice riding roads in Washington County, though.....Rt.63(just to the left of our driveway in the pic) is a main road that has lots of nice little off-shoots to some realllly nice riding.
I am very fortunate to live where I do!

What no CHROME fenders? :) Thats a great looking steed you have there.

I have tried to sell 2 this summer! Both times I had no bids, I think I stared both at $75 or close to it. one was a first gen. but had some run on the inside of the upper pulley cage, the other was a barely used 2nd gen. with it's share of scratches. I ended up trading or selling them to bike forum members I couldn't get rid of them. I suck at selling things on ebay.:rolleyes:

At the beginning of the summer I purchased an NOS 2nd gen locally for Dr. D. then all of a sudden it started raining Rallys. I picked up 3 used ones 2 first gen and 1 2nd gen. over the course of the summer. East hill got one of the 1st gen.s and Dr.D. got another 2nd gen. I kept one first gen. for myself... I picked up a sachs huret new success long cage RD last week which has the same geometry as the 1st gen. look and quality are excellent and I may use it in the future in conjunction with the NOS 13-28 7s Maillard Sachs freewheel I picked up today:D [/hijack]

Have you ever seen the Valentino derailleurs? These are literally the Edsels of the Campag. line, since Tullio did have a son named Valentino.

Campus Green, chrome, and Coppertone are indeed fabulous colors for Paramounts. The only change I would make would be to route the brake cables over the handbars instead of under.

I like the half-step gearing, as well. I finally have all the parts I need to regear Capo #2 with a 49-46 chainring combo, a kinder, gentler alternative to your 52-49.

Haha! A rare bird, indeed! ..... the shifting mechanism in the GT left something to be desired...

They made some really horrible stuff in the bike boom 70s, trying to get the cost down to put Campagnolo components on the cheapest bikes. The Valantino deraillers certainly qualify, as does that slow, heavy, ugly boat anchor of a Gran Tourismo.

It wasn't a difficult decision to change it out once I tried to shift the durned thing.....I then did some research on this board and found out the Rally was a period correct replacement for the G.T..... It was just finding one that was in good shape that wouldn't break the bank! .... and it shifts GREAT! No problems at all, so far.....

I'm a bit of a redneck and we like shiny stuff :)

That Paramount is breathtaking and my size!;) Glad to see another member of the Freakishly Tall Club here on BF.

Ha! That's why I can't have too much chrome on my bike....my eye is drawn towards shiny stuff....I'd end up riding into a curb or someones car and getting drool over everything....:D


PastorBob and I had been talking over on the Schwinn forum and he recommended I post over here....
I've seen so many nice Paramounts and other vintage steel here that wish I had come over sooner!....and I wish I had gotten back into cycling earlier, too.....oh well, it is what it is and we are where we are, right?

Tall bikes aren't hard to find, but finding a good 25-26" Paramount is like finding GOLD!
