doing braze ons
Has anyone here ever done their own braze-ons? I have a junk x-mart frame i got for free sittin in my garage begging to be messed with. So i have been researching how to do braze ons, figuring i will get the stuff together and give it a shot. Problem is, i have found some info but not a whole lot, but what i have found seems pretty simple, just a matter of getting the hang of it. Is there any info you guys can give me on technique to use, or where to get things to braze on.
Thanks, Brew |
Practice, practice, practice!!
Also helps if you have a framebuilder in town. Sometimes they will let you hang out & watch. More so if you prove to be "helpful" to have around. ;) As a note, using silver solder is best for braze-ons. It's something like 46% silver, so melts at a lower temp than straight brass. And use LOTS of flux! One trick I learned watching a framebuilder, was how to hold the braze-on in place while you braze it. It would take 1,000 words to describe, so I'll post a picture later. It's very simple and only requires an old wire coathanger. As for where to get the braze-ons, I know there is a supplier, I just can't remember the name. I usually just get what I need from above mentioned frame builder, if I don't have what I need in my metal box from 20 years ago. Another note that just came to mind, practice UNbrazing old frames. Heat everything up until it comes apart. To get the threaded part for East Hill's bottle bosses, I went to the dump and got an old Giant mtn bike for $5. I UNbrazed the parts I needed, cleaned them up and brazed them to her frame. I guess you could call that recycling! |
thanks doc, i was thinking i would try unbrazing some parts on that xmart frame and them try to braze them back on this weekend. and if that goes well, then trying to find a local frame builder, although i dont believe we have one here.
ill be looking forward to that pic, and thanks for the info. |
