Found my dream bike but don't have the cash...
Have any of you had luck offering to make payments on your vintage dream bike...I think I found mine but I can't afford it right now. I could probably pay it in three weeks. I was thinking of offering a 100$ deposit and my old Campy Record wheelset as collateral. I only paid 10$ for the wheels so the risk is low. Oh man if I can get my hands a filet brazed bike I will be a happy camper!

Depends on how well you know the seller, if you really trust him, maybe you could give him $100 of it and let him hold the bike for the next 3 weeks till you get the money squared away.

My local bike shop does lay-away for people who don't have the cash and don't want to charge it.
They will give folks 90 days with a deposit. I think that's generous.

The C&V shop near me takes credit cards. Not the smartest idea, but if you're afraid the bike might get away, they're handy for a quick purchase.
The best way would be to offer a large cash deposit or see if they do layaway. Depending on how well the seller knows and trusts you, they'll be more willing to deal with you.

It wouldn't hurt to ask. Coming up with a reasonably large sum of money may help convince the seller that you are in earnest.
