What are my options??
 

Araya World Champion Aero 1 tubular rims came on my '72 P15 Paramount. I would like to put "period correct" clincher wheels on it, so that I can actually put this fine bike into my "rotation" and ride it regularly....so which clincher wheelset can I put on it without feeling guilty about it ? ;)

I have a nice set of Super Champion Gentlemen rims earmarked for another project('81 Superior)....

Also, anybody want to post the "history" of the World Champion rims and/or S/C Gentleman rims on here....?

I used Sun CR18s to lace to my high flange Schwinn Approved hubs for the Super Sport. They are beautiful polished alloy rims with eyelets and you can get them from Harris:

I wish I had a picture to show. But I promise they are beautiful and would look perfect on a set of Campy Record high flange hubs. Trust me on this.

Period correct limits your options considerably. But I believe the best option for your '72 is probably the Weinmann clinchers with dimples at the spoke holes that many of the 70's Paramount touring bikes came with. Just make sure to use a tire with a steel bead (non-folding), like (some of the) Panaracer Paselas, because the rims are not set up to take folding tires (not hook beaded) -- they'll blow off the rims. Those rims/wheels may be a bit tough to locate. Araya clinchers might be a good back-up (don't know what if anything would be correct for that early, though). Or Rigidas, though these have a reputation for being a bit "soft." I have the Rigidas (model 1320) on a wheelset built with Campy high flange hubs on my '72 Motobecane Le Champion and they work fine. Super Champion 58's may have been available early 70's; not sure.
If it were me, I would take Pastor Bob's advice and not sweat the period correct part. Really good narrow clincher rims didn't come into being until the Mavic Module E's circa 1975. I will say, the period Weinmann clincher wheels with Campy HF hubs I had on my now-sold '75 P-10 provided a very cushiony ride.

I'm building my wheels with the Rigida touring rims from Velo-Orange. They're a bit wider than a racing rim: 700x28 would be fine, maybe 700x25 tires depending on how the size runs. Super Champions would be nice but hard to come by. I thought about using the CR18's but I didn't like the profile. I wanted a pure box section. Here's a picture of the CR18 - this is anodized the polished ones look the same save for the finish:

I already have a set of the Super Champions , so I thought they might work..... I just don't want to get too far away from what realistically would've been on it around the early to mid-70s ... I know where to get more S/C's , if I have to .... :)

FWIW, when I broke a rim at the seam hitting a pothole around 75-76, the Super Champion Gentleman is what I replaced the rim with so my bike had them back then. I still have it but it's 27" and I wanted to go to 700C.
