Replace the chain or not?
 

Recently got a 1983/84 Velosport Prestige. All components are in really good shape. Being new to vintage bikes I asked my LBS about chain replacement (in addition to all rubber) and they suggested I do it even though it is is good shape (has been soaked and cleaned). Looking for some feedback / suggestions.

If its in good shape, why would you replace it? Brake pads deteriorate whether they are used or not. Considering how critical they are, I would consider replacing them. But a chain that was lubed and did not rust, why replace it?

My thoughts as well, which is why I made the post. Thought that maybe I missed something being a newbie.It never hurts to ask. Thanks for the reply.

Even though the chain looks to be clean and in good shape, it is possible that there is enough wear causing the chain to "stretch". If a 12" section of chain has stretched more than 1/16th", then undue wear can/will be occurring to your gears. For more info check out Sheldon's site...

Good point McDave, I'm assuming dnpaha checked the chain for wear or the LBS did. If the wear is now out of spec then certainly the chain should be replaced. But I never replace an chain that's on an older bike just because its "old". The only other reason for replacing a chain would be excessive rust.

Thanks guys. No I did not check for wear, as stated this is a learning curve (an enjoyable one at that). I will check out the Sheldon Brown Link.

Inspect the chain not only for Sheldon's 1/2 percent elongation but also for misaligned rivets and frozen rollers.

Just checked it and it's right on. Sprokets are in great shape too (not much wear).
