Another Puch Question.
 

I'm sorry, forgive me, you've probably been asked. I searched but didn't find reference to this bike. I just got a 1984 Puch Classic black with gold lettering. That's all it says Puch on the down tube and Classic on the top tube. It has a Sun Tour 7 Gt rear , Suntour 7 front, Suzie hubs, Sugino Crank Set, Diacompe brakes, Araya 27 x 1 1/4" rims with original Kenda gum wall tires It has a sticker that says:

Competition No. 5
Chrome Molybden Steel
Seamless PG Tubing
Tange Industries

And another that says:

Kuwahara
Osaka, Japan

And it has a sticker with 3 Olympic rings (What didn't in 84?)

Is this a decent bike? Any idea where it would fall in a model line up for Puch? I will add a picture tomorrow. On the office PC, camera is at home.

It doesnt sound like a bad bike. I dont know much about those components so i cant really cant give you a great idea, but i believe alot of mid range bikes were equipped with those components.
Im sure someone who is more familiar with the bike and the components will com along eventually and give you a good idea of what you got.

Well good or bad I took it to the LBS to give the wheels some attention, bought some new bar tape, and a new Brooks B-17 for it. They said it was a middle ground bike with very little use/wear. It fits me well and I like how it looks. It'll do me till I save up for my Surly LHT.

I concur with brew. It sounds like a great general-purpose road bike.

Yeah, it's a decent Japanese-made Puch with Tange Champion #5, a heavier tubing, but will be very durable. Probably made flawlessly in the Kuwahara factory by robots. I didn't know that Puch had contracted to have them built there in '84, but now we know...high-end Puchs from this era would have been built in Italy by Bianchi. If you want to play "upgrade" I'd suggest a good light 700C wheelset and long-reach brakes, if needed.
