Campagnolo Hubs**********??......for free!!!!
Well,
Not trying to brag or anything, but I just got a set of Campy hubs laced on some Ambrosio tubular rims for nothing. I went to pick up a bike I won on ebay for 25 euros that I'm going to strip off all the parts to put on a beater I have now. When I went inside the man's garage to get the velo I saw two sets of rims against the wall, I must of been starring because the man said that if I wanted them I could take them since they were only collecting dust and he was going to throw them away. I said ok and just took and put them in my jeep and didn't even bother to look at them since I was there for the bike and these rims must be some poor sons of ...... Well, once I got home and looked at them, I saw that one was a campy set and the other some, what I assume, really old ones with butterfly type nuts. Could you guys help me out with the year of them? I still don't know if I'm going to use them, since I'm going to put a modern group on the Colnago. I might put them on this Cilo I got for a friend but who knows. If I don't end up using them, what would be a fair asking price? Another option would be to trade them for something I can use on my Colnago that I'm building or for the mystery bike that I'm building for my wife.

Those are standard eighties Campy Record Hubs and Ambrosio Montreal Durex tubular rims available early to mid 1980s. They were pretty much equivalent to a Mavic GP4. A strong training/racing rim. Bought a wheelset just like them in 1983 for my Raleigh Competition for maybe $175.

$175.00 may be on the high side. I got a pair of the same wheels except Ambrosio Metamorphisis rims for $125.00 off ebay last summer. Polish them up, take pretty pictures to get the most out of them on ebay. The lock nuts on the axels are supposed to have the date stamped on the inside face.

Those wheels are well-worth using. If the spoke tension is even and high, and the bearings spin well, then you just need to get some tires on them. They should be lighter than most modern factory wheels. High-end tubular wheels do not usually sell for the kind of prices you are talking about, sometimes they don't even sell. You can try, but if you have a 120 mm frame, maybe you should jsut use them.
I have several similar wheelsets, and I drove one with 36 h 3-cross Wolber rims through a major pothole at my speed (don't ask, it was nighttime!). No damage to front, rear, or the tires! Tubular rims and tires are way stronger than they look when built right!

Thanks guys for you input. I just got that Cilo today and I'm planning on putting all my Campy components that I've managed to attain thus far on it. We'll see how it looks and more importantly how it rides. This Cilo frame set really looks good and is really light.
