Sturmey Archer trigger on standard alloy road bars?

Has anyone modified a Sturmey Archer trigger to fit on standard alloy road bars? Diameter 23.5mm 15/16".

I finally got my RRA Moderne together. Seems it's likely a 1957 not a '58. Frame, wheels and drivetrain (Williams C1200 crank, SA FM 4 speed) are all great.

The position of the shifter, just under the right brake lever, works great. Just like STI.

But the bars have to go if I'm ever going to ride it more than 5 miles at a time. Neither the bend or the width works for me. They're 39cm narrow. I like Nitto 45mm B115s with the drops splayed out to 49cm.

Have you tried spreading the clamp and using a longer screw? I haven't tried it either , but I just went out to the garage and looked at mine and I think it will work.

Uh, yeah, no "modification", just spread the clamp and use a longer, smaller diameter screw. (Yes, I'm using one on a bike now that way).

Riders have been doing this since before the war. The Great War. :)

Doh! I never noticed that there are two different types of SA trigger clamps. Given that I have two drawers full of triggers, I think that's pretty amazing. I did find out that you can use the type that bolts through the shifter body, with alloy bars. by using a longer, curved bolt. I just dug out one of the other type and I'm all set up.

BTW Those Swallow bars do look nice. They would be great for someone building up a "Light Roadster". But if I wanted that sort of bend for this bike, I'd have just inverted a pair of steel Raleigh North Roads.

I tucked a Sturmey-Archer trigger up under the left brake handle of my 3x4 hybrid 12-speed, to facilitate double shifts with the right-side Simplex downtube lever. I used the long bolt trick described above. It proved to be a very satisfactory setup for commuting: 12 gears from 40 to 100.
