Did he do this simply to have material to braze together? If so that is completely idiotic. Actually, I can't think of a non-idiotic reason for this if it's not a repair, which wouldn't be done like that in the first place. It took me forever to find a good touring bike, and he cuts one to pieces just for the heck of it.

perhaps the frame is bent somewhere that is not easy to see... it does seem wasteful
