Merckx Falcons
My neighbor is bugging me to buy his Merckx/Falcon. He's giving me the 'nobody will appreciate it like you' B.S.
What I can tell you is thats its orange and has Campy dropouts with a 3-arm Campy crank.
School me on these....BTW..I read all of the archive material.
It looks like this one:

Thanks,
Jim

We need more pictures, particularly pics of the crank and derailleurs. Also look for a decal that indicates the tubing. Falcon made a wide range of Eddy Merckx bikes that ranged from dreadful to very very nice. This one looks like it's above dreadful. A three arm Campy Gran Sport cotterless aluminum crankset would be pretty cool to own.

I saw one of these at a bikeshop in DC last fall, orange color and everything, 531 frame. Non-remarkable parts, the crank had been replaced with a "mutilated" Sugino, and it was single-speeded. The shop wanted $265 for it. No thanks!

Frame: Orange, good condition for the age, Campy dropouts, NO tubing decal.
Cranks/BB: both Campy, 3-arm cotterless apearing to be steel.
Derailleurs: Shimano Crane rear, Titlist front, Shimano levers with with tip covers.
Brakes: Weinmann with Campy cable clips
Seat: old leather
He wants a little over $300 and said if he cant sell it it'll go on Ebay. If I buy it it'll end up sitting for 6 months while I work on other projects, but I know I can make it sparkle.
Crapy pics....

With campy drop outs its gotta be a descent frame I would imagine, but thats all you're really buying as all the parts on it seem to be junk really - making $300 really pricey, pass!.

He's pricing it based on a frameset and a few odd componets that recently sold on Ebay for $240. He figures if a frameset went for $240 an entire bike, mostly original, would go for more. Good rational on his part. I know I can make it d***le and bling. Maybe I'll offer him $275 or so but then agian I need some parts for my 'vette.
I think its a Giro D'Italia model 104.....regardless, if you look over all the specs its a Reynolds DB frame.

Nothing to write home about - pretty much the equivalent of a late '70s Raleigh Super Course bearing the EM name. Anything over $200 is more then adequate to make him eligible for Numbskull Of The Day.
Oh, and if he's bugging you to buy it at his price to boot, tell him to shut up and put it on eBay, where he'll run into many other people who appreciate these bikes...and do not nessesarly appreciate a-hole pricing.
