Capo on ebay

Cool bike, opening bid seems high given condition, but who knows?

Shame about the rusted lugs, looks like the rust may have gone too far to save it

That is the Capo which was on craigslist last week for $85. Now I know who beat me to it.

Looks like the owner left it outside every night and used it on an indoor trainer every morning.

Are you sure it is the same one? Neal listed his for about $85, but this one has almost all of the original components, except the SunTour freewheel (original would have been Caimi or Regina 14-22 or 14-26) and the barcons (Campag. downtube levers were standard). This one is probably a late 1960 or early 1961 model, and given the chrome and brazed-on trim bits, full double-butted Reynolds 531.

The Capo I'm referring to appeared on Orange County craigslist on Friday Oct.19th. for $85. Described as very rusty, Reynolds 531db, Campi hubs, derailleurs. Was gone almost immediately. My email to the seller went unanswered. A couple of pics were with the ad. Sure looks like the same bike. Seller was in Santa Ana. Not sure who Neal is?

I do remember seeing a link to that Craig's List posting for the Capo last week and checking out the ad (and I was going to email you about it, John!). That's indeed the same bike now on eBay, and perhaps the same image.

I did sell a Capo frameset for $85 to someone on the CR list. Different color, similar patina.

Thanks for your clarification. I was beginning to question my memory. Nice to make your acquaintance, Neal. Nice bike collection also.

Opening bid's about 3X what the bike's worth in that condition.

Well said. It sold for $85 on craigslist. In all fairness to Buycycle911 he does furnish a good set of pictures. Potential buyers can't say they were unaware of the condition.

It just sold for $332.57 (about $400 with shipping) to the highest of three tightly clustered bidders. This is very consistent with the final auction bid on a remarkably similar 55cm Model Campagnolo which sold two years ago in west Los Angeles. Two frame sizes were exported to California, and the smaller 55cm C-T frames, such as both of mine, are far more common than the larger size.

I disagree. The chrome and paint are indeed a disaster, but the components alone, including the adjustable reach Ambrosio stem, Campagnolo Record high-flange hubset, Gran Sport derailleur set, and Campagnolo barcons, are collectively worth at least $200.

Final price seemed ok to me for what it was, but opening at 300. was too rich for me. I think the seller would've had more interest and a final bidding frenzy with a much lower opening bid.

But a cool original bike worth just cleaning up and leaving alone.

OK, so the opening bid is about 1.5X what it's worth... :)

One can debate various minimum bid and reserve strategies -- I honestly do not know what works best.

... or repainting. I am enjoying having one of each.
