Identifying Old Rim
I'm trying to build my first wheel, I will be putting a cheap Suzue track hub on an older rim, but I'm not sure what size spokes I will need. The only marking on the rim says Matrix Anodic but I haven't been able to track it down from this. It's 36h, light gray color, a pretty decent rim. I'm pretty sure it's 27", not 700C Any ideas what this might be, or what it might be similar to so i can look it up with a spoke calculator? If not, can anyone direct me to a site with simple instructions for measurement? I only have pretty basic tools (ie. no calipers) so I'm worried I won't be able to get accurate enough measurements...

Matrix was the brand for Trek components. Their rims were generally made in the USA, and might have been contract-built by somebody like Sun (experts may know, perhaps the Vintage Trek site has info). You could get a pretty close idea of ERD by measuring with a metric tape measure from a spoke hole across to the opposite hole, estimating the points that a nipple head would seat in both places.

Matrix rims were the house rims for Trek, and yes pretty nice rims.
they produced both 700c and 27" rims, and many of their rims is
the same size (700c or 27") had different ERDs.
without knowing the model of rim you're going to have to measure
ERD (effective rim diameter), Spocalc states that ERD is measured to the
end of the spoke usually flush with the spoke nipple.
Sheldon Brown defines it as:
Effective Rim Diameter. This is the rim diameter measured at the nipple seats in the spoke holes. The E.R.D. is needed for calculating the correct spoke length. (thank you Sheldon).
Shouldn't be too hard to figure out

The easiest way I've found to figure out whether the rim is 27" or 700c is to try mounting a tire on it. You'll know right off which it is (and it doesn't matter whether you try a 27" or 700c tire).
I do have wheel built with a 700c Matrix Titan Touring rim, and it's held up well. It's also 40-hole, which allowed me to lace a Sturmey Archer FM hub onto it. I also wonder if Matrix was/is made by Sun as they're manufactured in the USA.
