Cracking Peugeot Decals

I have a '83 PSN10 Peugeot with the paint in very good condition, but all the decals are cracked. They are not peeling but the cracking is really bothering me. Is there anything particular thats causing it and how i can prevent it. I've never seen any other Peugeots on the forum have cracked decals. Are the decals clearcoated? I liked to replace them if anyone knows where to get decals for a Peugeot bike of this year.

No, the decals are noot clearcoated. That's why they're cracking. I found the Peugeot decals I needed at Yellow Jersey
https://www.yellowjersey.org/peudecal.html
Cyclomondo on eBay has a few to offer.

Yea thanks man I seen that site before but they have no decals for my Peugeot of that era. But why is the decals cracked? I seen many Peugeot within the same year as mine and theirs is not cracked at all.

Why do decals crack up.

The reason behind the cracking is the vinyl they used in the 1980's had a typical life span between 5-7 years. Then over time the vinyl plastic loses the rest of the plasticizer softeners and it becomes brittle. The heat and cold do the rest of the damage. Pulling and tugging back and forth until the decal cracks open. I've even seen water transfer decals do the same thing. Present day materials are less likely to crack because of the different UV laminates and UV clear paints hold the softeners in place. If you need help with your decals let me know as I am the resident BF decal maker. JR.

My 1984 psvn has cracked decals as well. It stands in contrast to my 97 Bianchi TSXUL---which appears to have real painted lettering
