I got this one cheap so I might sell it cheap.a guy offered me 55 and am I going soft or should I let it go? the brakes are probably wrong for "chop-n-flop bars and I used scrap tape but it was my first attempt.

My wife has the Ladies version of the same bike. It's too big for her (20" frame), so she never rides it. She got it in eighth grade but never grew into it.

If you can get $55, take the money and run!

What you have is the first rendetion of the re-introduced Collegiate. In '64 Schwinn brought the Collegiate back with a five speed RD and a toptube shifter. I forget when, but the prior version of the Collegiates ended in the late '50s, were either 3 or single speed bikes. Your bike is either a '65 or '66. The '64 had painted fenders and in '67 Schwinn moved the shifter to the stem. While the toptube shifter models are not rare, they are harder to find than the newer ones.

I hope you didn't "chop" the original bars. Here are pictures of my two. A Radiant Blue '64 and a Coppertone '66. The more original a Collegiate, the more it is worth. Pristene ones with the toptube shifter have gone for up to and past $200.

Yeah ... I can see that bike bringing $100+. The saddle is $35 and the rear derailleur is $35+ alone ...

I did see one '64 Collegiate go for $650 on the 'Bay, but it had quite a few accessories and I think it was an anomoly.

No Rev.Schwinn,I didn't chop the original bars.They were a pair of drop bars that were smahed on one side.I think I have a pair that may pass for originals and since I still have the collegiate,I will take the whole bar-brake lever assembly off and get it to look correct.Thanks for the info.I have a hard time with this site and my computer skills leave a little to be desired.I forget which posts I replied to,so I have to check the search by user name section.This is awesome though.

My collegiate is a 66 with the soon-to-be-removed chop-n-flops

I routinely ask $100-$130 for these, and get it? Your opinion of them doesn't make them worth less money, lol.,,,,BD

I sold a Collegiate for $200 over the summer and a couple of Suburbans for $150 a piece. With original equipment and in VG condition you should be able to do the same. I've found that Suburbans are quite attractive to the college commuter crowd, since they have a chain guard and fenders.

Of course selling bikes like these for more than they cost new is dependent on your location. I was in a town with a two large universities. I think I could over $100 even with the bars.

Thank you very much for the supportive comments ,You know who you are .I know those bars are lousy.they are too narrow.I just need to round up the correct weinmann calipers.I have a set of blue Schwinn grips fromanother bike .they are sparkly,Is that correct ?They are not extrrememly valuable to be saved for a stingray ? Do solid color ones ...black I think...I will look at Pastorbob's pics.

Gee P.B. That coppertone is really cool looking. I bet the Volare would look good in that color if I can't get the pearlescent orange in powdercoat.

:eek:I believe I have done a good job on the collegiate.Lucky I found some weinmann levers with black thingies/dots and then I replaced the cables to match the black.Tres chic.The grips have a space in them for padding a cushion built in.Are these older than the bike? they look like the ones in the other posts. Glad I didn't sell it !:D

There's a lot to be said for a Schwinn 5 speed, and not all of it is negative. They are great bikes for shopping and short jaunts in the hood. Every home should have at least one.

Thanks Old Fat guy,Stacey Bob huff and PB..I will have to take it out for a few short jaunts.Reminds me of the time many years ago I got blown away on paved woods trails here in North Chicago by some clown on a regular old one -speed .Maybe it was a three-speed but I was crushed on my ten-speed,I could not keep up.
