I decided to swap the 10 speed group from the Caldaro to the Gazelle. I like this bike a lot: light, stiff, fast.

1975 Woodrup with DuraAce 7400. Running an 8-speed rear with first year DuraAce brifters I believe. Works, looks, and rides beautifully I think some white bar tape would be better suited for it now that I look at it, but the black will have to do for now.

Wow, I love this thread. My only road bike other than my beater commuter, is a 70's era Coppi Campionissimo, that I've upgraded somewhat, and now I'm thinking of going to STI shifters. I'm not going to post a picture until I can get the frame repainted, though.

These are some *gorgeous* bikes! This poor schoolteacher can't touch stuff like that.

I am guessing that I have less than $1100 in the Eddy Merckx pictured above.

I love this thread. I have an 80s Cannondale that I've thought of upgrading to STI. It's got mostly Shimano 600 parts - 6 speed freewheel, 126mm spaced rear, indexed downtube shifters, etc. Could someone tell me if it would even be possible to switch it to STI, and what I might need? I've been under the impression that I could just get 7 speed Shimano brifters, a 7 speed freewheel, and maybe a new rear derailleur to make the switch, but something tells me it wouldn't be that easy. Thanks.

I'm considering doing the same thing to my 85 trek 600 which also has shimano 600 right now. We'll figure it out one way or another: this thread is good inspiration.

The hardest part is going to be the spacing. Modern STI stuff (everything eight-speed and on) uses 130 spacing. It's not a big deal with steel road bike, because you just spread the rear triangle apart and insert your 130mm hub, but with aluminum (as your Cannondale is), you're stuck with the 126 spacing. Some people say you can cold-set aluminum, but I've never seen it done. What I have seen is bikes destroyed in the rear triangle from fairly minor crashes or from being slightly bent during shipping. I know that my shop won't reset aluminum, but you might find someone more skilled who can.

pacificaslim, you shouldn't have any trouble with an old Trek 600. You'll just need some downtube shifter-boss cable routers, along with whatever component group you pick.

Yeah, I figured that would be the biggest problem. But since 7 speed hub spacing was still 126mm, wouldn't it be possible to rig up some 7 speed Sora or RSX STIs? It's probably not worth it from a financial standpoint, but I'm just curious.

get a 9sp cassette and use it on a 126mm spaced hub, you'll be able to fit 8 of 9 on there.
it's spaced for shimano 9sp so you'll be able to use shimano 9sp STIs or campy 10sp ergos.

Kinda wish I hadn't seen this thread......Here's what I'm starting with:

Planning to add a Ultegra / Mavic Open Pro wheelset (annodized grey) and a new crankset (yet to be determined)
For the sake of saving money, I think I'm going to use downtube shifters unless I can find a screaming deal on some shifter/brake lever combos. (had to look up "brifters" might take a bit to work it into my vocabulary)

Great looking bikes fellas. Thanks for the inspiration

You could do that. I bought some 7 speed Sora's on ebay for about $100 and put them on my wife's commuter bike. You might be able to use the rear derailleur. I have on some bikes, but not others. My guess is that you will have to change the front derailleur. I haven't had any success using what ever was on the bike. The shifters came with the cable stops and then the front derailleur was $20. So she had STI shifting for about $120.
