This is pretty much exactly what I want to do with mine. What bars are those?

I just pulled the trigger on a set of 5600 levers, so I'm locked in now. Which is good, the anxiety of trying to choose the perfect group for this was driving me mad.

The handlebars are Soma HWY ONE. They come in 26.0 and 31.8 clamp diameters and black and white flavours.

I have an American Classic version. It's heavy, but shifts perfectly. I'd love to know what the weight difference is with the Ambrosio. The Wheels Mfg 10-sp Campy-spaced Shimano 105 cassette, at $160, is a little steep. For that money, they could have at least used Ultegra or DA.

I've also used the Wheels Mfg 8-sp Shimano to Campy spacers, and they worked very well, greatly increasing the number of wheels and cassettes you can use. Even at $60, a good value. Those conversion cassettes open up a ton of wheels to Campagnolo usage. SRAM could make some money by cooperating in that regard.

I sold some Easton EA90SLX wheels because they were Shimano/SRAM, and the next day, bought some parts in a box, and yep, there was an Easton R4 rear freehub in there, Campagnolo-compatible.

I'm using the Wheels Mfg Campy 8-spd conversion spacers between Shimano cogs on an Ultegra hub with my wife's 8-spd Chorus brifters and long-cage Campy RD. It requires more meticulous adjustment (same was true when it was Campy cogs and hub), and it prefers a SRAM chain to a Wipperman, but it is now shifting perfectly, and gives a MUCH wider range of cog options from all that is available from Shimano and SRAM. I build our custom cassettes from loose cogs, of which I've got a pile, and can be created from readily available 7- and 8-spd cassettes. The Shimano chrome-plated cogs seem to be more durable than the old Campy 8-spd cogs.

I'm using Campy 10s on my trainer. It works well in the trainer and on the stand, but I've never used it on the road.

Ah, yes, those things. I think I put nearly 1000 on a pair without any issues, they just weren't very exciting to look at. Mine were black.

Thanks so much. I've never put so much effort (or money) into a build before, and I couldn't believe how satisfying it was to ride it for the first time and have it ride even better than I'd hoped. I'm very proud of it.

You should be.

I remember Wheels Mfg offering a conversion service where you sent them a 9 speed Ultegra cassette and they would "machine" it to work with Campy 10 speed. For the life of me, though, I can't seem to find that service on their website. At any rate, the 10 speed cassette they offer as a conversion cassette is listed as an Ultegra at 224 grams for the 11-25.

Here's the trick: Back when they offered the service, I ordered an Ultegra 9 speed through the shop I worked at and sent it away. They don't actually machine anything. The largest 3 cogs are mounted to an aluminum spider. All they do is swap the included spacers for the other 6 cogs with their own and add an 11 tooth cog on the top. So all I really have to do is buy a few Ultegra 9 speed cassettes at whatever they sell for now (probably cheap) and I have cassettes for life on that bike after I just swap the spacers and add the 11 tooth I rarely use on the bike.

I often wondered if that was the case...

anything special about the 11?

whats the thickness of the spacers?

Nice job on the trek and bianchi. Have fun with all the flats you're gonna get with the Ultra Sports. Worst tires I've ever used.

You know, the more I think about it, perhaps there was some slight machining involved. The smallest cog on the 9 speed didn't have a spacer, so they may have slightly machined that. And the 11 tooth cog looked like any other ordinary top cog, but again, they may have slightly machined it down from a Shimano stock cog.

It's on the bike right now, so I'd have to do an unnecessary tear down to get measurements, but the next time I have it off (I sometimes use the open pros on my wife's bike and need to swap cassettes) I will try to look at it more carefully. I'll also try to get a hold of a 9 speed Ultegra cassette and compare. I'll dig up this thread and update it when I do.

1987 D'Arienzo (Basso). Frame bought from S Florida, where Basso had to market their bikes as D'Arienzo's for some reason. Research on that was by BF member cudak888, who has one on velospace, sans decals. Columbus SLX, 10-sp Centaur Century Grey (couldn't find grey rings, no biggie). Hudz from thirdgenbird, group from a BF member as well, wheels are , tires are now Campy Eurus, tires are Vredestein Fortezza TriComps, cage is by Tubi, Bontrager saddle, Miche post and Cinelli steering. I kind of got into the grey/red thing, but the bike doesn't look near as "busy" in person. There were actually 3 red stripes on each end of the D'Arienzo logos, but I removed them.

EDIT: kind of a make-over.

Outstanding work there Robbie.
