I just put this together a few weeks ago. Nice ride all around...1985 Basso Gap with circa 2008 (?) Campy Centaur 10 speed. Some may recall seeing this in the appraisal section as I was trying to help a friend decide whether the Basso in it's 1985 build was a good bike to buy.

1990 Mike Appel

I bought this a little while ago with all Shimano 600 Tri Color components (7 speed DT shifters).
Converted everything to Campagnolo except the pedals which are DA7810 and the headset which is still Shimano.

Here it goes:
  • Brakes: Chorus 10s
  • Derailleurs: Chorus 10s
  • Cranks: Chorus 10s 175mm
  • Shifters: 8s Ergos (either Veloce or early Athena)
  • Front hub: 36h Athena 100mm
  • Rear hub: 7s 36h Athena 126mm cassette hub (seems to be really rare and works with 8s Exa Drive cogs)
  • Rims: H+Son 14TB mirror polished
  • Seat post: Super Record polished
  • Tires: Gatorskins
  • Saddle: Selle Italia Flite Giro d Italia Ltd Edition Black/Pink
  • Pedals: Shimano Dura Ace 7810
  • Head set: Shimano Ultegra
  • Cables: Blue Jagwire
  • Tires: Continental Gatorskin
  • Handle bar tape: Fizik cork tape pink

Initially I thought I would have to respace to 130mm since I didn't like the gear ratio of the 7s Shimano setup but now everything works perfectly for me. Wanted to go 32h but the hubs dictated 36h wheels.

Rides like a dream and I couldn't be happier, except that I am sad that I am all done; was a lot of fun to put it all together.
Probably need a new project soon :)

BTW, how do I embed a picture full size instead of a thumbnail. I tried with a link to Flickr but no luck.

Very nice work.

Bet it rides great for you. :)

This bikes proves once again that this is the thread where the beauty is at. Seriously cool bike. Is it a 10/8 shimergo? The only thing that would bother me is the black shifter paddles.

Yep - 10/8. Is Veloce available with silver paddles?

The previous shaped veloce levers had silver paddles. You could also run all silver Athena levers with a 9spd cassette.

RobbieTunes 09-15-13 05:45 PM

Paddles. Sort of like asking Ginger about the beauty mark.

thirdgenbird 09-15-13 05:50 PM

Could be much worse. The bike could be wearing any shimano sti ever made.

:)

Although, I must say the 105s on my La Cruz are hanging in there.

They work fine but they are not pretty like their Italian counterpart.

Understatement!

The La Cruz has turned into a surprise though.

Bought it for my oldest son and I ended up falling in love with the bicycle.

Everything works so well on the bike....

Even though not technically a qualifier, I feel like my main steed belongs here.

RobbieTunes 09-28-13 03:23 AM

Nice mix. Of about everything, it seems. Very cool looking bike.

Okay, what is it? :D

It seems to be what I call the "sweet years" which 1985 to 1991..IMO, that frame is begging for a powder coat, with fresh labels..

It is a very handsome and balanced bike.. :thumb:

I agree! The Fulcrums are nice wheels, esp. on the retro-rides. I've got a Fulcrum 7 front wheel, can't wait to try it with its new rim...

rccardr 09-28-13 03:57 PM

Harlan, I remember seeing the pics of you hand painting the bubbles and circles on that 'unknown' italian frame.
Gotta say...IT ROCKS!
