Sholow and C1904, those are some beautiful builds that transcend the original bikes |

They are completely fug. There's no way they look appropriate on any vintage bike. On modern CF? Sure, because there everything is fug, and the black 5800 fits that theme. It all ties together nicely, in a weird, nightmarish, Alien-Vs-Predator, modern sic-fi industrial chic dynamic.
But on a vintage steel frame; it's all just ugly scabs and black eyes. :( |

Are the 5800 cranks anodized black on aluminum? If so, then you could spray oven cleaner on it, clean and then polish the aluminum. Would be a lot of work but might make the cranks look cool again. I recall doing that way back when on a pair of Araya BMX rims in high school. :)
I picked up a silver 105 5800 groupset on clearance recently (new 105 r7000 groupo has been released), and will post results of build when complete. The silver 5800 crank still has that bulk, and the color isn’t as good as vintage polished components, but it should perform very, very nicely. |

Here’s mine... tho it looks like the conversation itself is old enough to be vintage. 80s Columbus framed Miele with 8 speed mirage ergos https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...321c21295.jpeg If yes, here is an old thread to help you identify the recalled versions: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...-straight.html |

Finding a bike with a pivo stem years ago taught me about death stems and other common component failure... |

good eye... it is an x-tenos stem. From the research I’ve done it doesn’t seem to be one of the recalled ones. It is pretty beefy around the binder bolt hole. |

Awesome, that's a relief! The stem works so well on your Miele.

Here's my two latest, 1989 Bottecchia Equipe running 20 speed Chorus, shod with regular wheels, 32h Campag Chorus and with shiny Sunday best Shamals.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2335808d0c.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...940c9943fd.jpg And this week I finished refitting my Gilco tubed Columbus SL Denti. New front deailleur, seat post, tyres, cable outers and inners.. Also running 20 speed Campagnolo with a semi compact 52/36 with 32/28h Campag Chorus wheels as its regular daily wheels, and also shown here with some Shamal tubulars fitted with Vittoria Open Pave's, cos they look cool:) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...240bb848be.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...eb720ca9a9.jpg |
Nice builds! The Bottecchia frame is a beauty! I'm a sucker for chrome lugs.
|
More pics of that Gilco Denti por favor! ^
Also, youre running a carbon fork? No original fork in hand? |
Seeing all of these amazing bikes makes me want to post some pics of my retro sti here as well..
Just not quite finished with my grail bike..a Fuso..maybe a sneak peek? Or maybe just the complete bike in a few weeks. Ill post a couple of mines for now.. |

Also, youre running a carbon fork? No original fork in hand? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e69b59b144.jpg It has some nice lugs, featuring more ladybirds. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ba792830a0.jpg Nice arrow point type lugs at the bottom bracket https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...53d1927f13.jpg The seat post cluster features what I think are called 'shot in' or 'fastback' seatstays. And of course feature more ladybirds. Its hard to tell from the photos but the seat stays are also wonderfully shaped, the tubing narrows at each end but is more bulbous in the middle, like Popeye's forearms but not so extreme:) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2a77407ce2.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e1abe35701.jpg Notice also that the rear brake cable routing, which is through the top tube, enters and exits the frame right at the ends of the top tube, quite different to the other bikes I have with internal top tube routing. I do find this very pleasing on the eye as it makes the rear cabling almost invisible on drive side photos, very neat....its like they've thought of everything:) https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...86c6f1a189.jpg And as I am running modern kit and carbon parts I thought I'd have a modern fork with an aheadset. I do still have the original fork, featuring, yes you guessed it, more ladybirds, this time on the fork crown, if I ever want to revert back to a more traditional look. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...502bf9898c.jpg Phrases like magic carpet ride are banded around often in cycling, but with 25c tyres and the Columbus SL tubing, this really is the smoothest riding and plush feeling of all my 8 bikes. I love it and as it was my first road bike I am hopelessly sentimentally attached to it, and will never sell it, its worth much more to me than the sum of its parts. |

Beautiful! What kind of bottle holders are those, if I may ask?

They are nice, but I swapped them for some from Performance because these ones contacted each other at the lowest point. They work well on other bikes, but they were too long for this frame. |
