1) I agree about the stem. Don't think I can go quill-less. I do need a slightly longer stem, as this one is only 70mm and I typically run a 90mm on this size frame. Will give the drops more of a chance, probably. I may pick up a soma hwy 1 bar just to compare.
2) and 3), not so convinced :) -- I know the rules about black/black but I still think it looks good: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7245/7...613ce503_b.jpg Other things to consider: it will get white tape when I change the bars, and I am thinking about gumwall Veloflex tires - I have an extra set. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Eleven81-AHD...ht_2709wt_1064 you get the best of both worlds with those threadless quill converters because you still have great height adjustment options (by simply raising the quill adaptor up and down) and also the benefit of threadless (more brifter friendly ergo bars and stem options, lighter weight (even with the threadless adaptor, easy swapping out of handlebars, and less flex). Once you figure out your ideal fit then you can look for quill options. Nitto actually makes brifter friendly drops in 26.0 diameters, also there are a ton of older mid 2000's easton carbon bars on eBay that are inexpensive, 26.0 diameter that are ergo/brifter friendly shapes - but still have longer reach (85-100mm reach compared to the 75-85mm en vogue right now). There's no getting around that a quill is a lot more aesthetically pleasing. My only recourse was to find silver threadless stems and bars (ritchey classic line stem and ritchey classic curve bars - which have very compact drops and flat tops 73mm reach 128mm drop). oh yeah NICE BIKE!!! we should meet up and compare builds. I'm in brooklyn too. |

You win. :) But not on the red Master 23s. Doesn't matter what I think though. It's your super nice Merckx to enjoy. I won't give up on the Veloflex tires though. Best performance clincher I've found next to Deda Tres RS Corsa. |
This is my all time favorite thread.

IMHO Veloflex are great...until there's debris on the road...or if it's raining/wet...and you don't mind replacing your very expensive handmade Italian tires after about 1000 miles because the tread wears so easily. :innocent:
Love how gumwalls look. If only Continental makes a clincher model with black chili treads. I use to run 3000s and 4000s until former forum member OFG hipped me to Velfoflex Paves. I haven't bought another Continental since other than Sprinters. |
So I...uh...can play here now too!

This year's Schwinn Tempo: an '87, powder coated in gloss black with custom cut decals, Shimano 5500 FD/RD/STI's, Truvativ compact crankset, Tektro R530's, 3TTT stem, SR bars, Shimano 600 aero seatpost, Cane Creek hubs with what I'm pretty sure are Kinlin rims, Vittoria Open Corsa CX tires. I always try to keep one Tempo in the stable and do a new one every year.

Sweet Schwinn, Doc!

I just picked up a couple of pairs of the new Master 23s. Super cheap for a nice tire at $38! Life's too short to ride cruddy tires and I ride with guys that swear by Continentals across the board as well. I tend to find something that works for me and do it over and over again. |
This is a great thread. I was about to build up my Merckx frame with 7 speed Campy downtube shifters, but after seeing all these great bikes I'm going with my 8 speed Dura Ace STI parts. Whew!! I wasn't sure if I could really go back to DT shifters after all these years.

So a bit of empty nest syndrome (the ex is riding the Cannondale I finished recently) led me to purchase this bad boy here (sorry about the crappy indoor cell phone picture quality). So far the only changes I'm making is swapping out the HB-1050 freewheel based wheelset for a freehub based one and installing Shimano ST-1055 shifters (to keep it "Shimano 105"). but I want to appeal to the aesthetically minded among you: 1) I have a nice, unused BR-1055 lying around doing nothing. Should I replace the BR-1050 (single pivot) with the BR-1055 (dual pivot) or stick with the original brakeset? 2) What color bar tape: White was original (especially with the white brake hoods it had), thinking going with red. . . but white was traditional Thanks |

1. Dual Pivot for sure.

I've finally joined the retro roadies crew! :3

Yay a Centurion.
I'm kind of upset white hood covers (for ST-6400, -1055, -a410, ect) are no longer made / rarer than hen teeth. Can get them for modern 10 sp stuff, but I ain't got none a' that no more. Just 8 speed 'round he-ah. |

Here's my Tardis. If all goes well and the USPS still delivers, it'll have Chorus carbon shifters, Record brakes and a 1R stem this evening. I'd still LOVE to find an extra small seat bag so it wouldn't look like I was sitting on a five pound purple turd. I also have to find someone to cut me some white vinyl letters to say "Police Box" for the top tube. Oh yeah, almost forgot: it's an '83 Waterford Paramount. |

This is what I use, and really like it: http://www.arundelbike.com/dual.html?p=1.1.2.1 This version is made for tubes; they also offer a version for tubulars. Mine carries two tubes, two CO2 cartridges w/inflator, two tires levers, and will also carry a small multi-tool.
