Why does he think he's so special?
Okay, this seems kind of silly, but I've done a lot of research on bikes and components (not to say that I've done any more than anyone else here) and I have found no other example a SunTour Cyclone dérailleur quite like mine. The only difference between the one that I have and all the other first gen. Cyclone is that mine has a very distinct lack of black paint on the outer plate. This is a NOS dérailleur. It has no trace of paint anywhere. It was never there. If anyone has ever seen this than tell me and I'll stop wondering, but if I have something that will have Japanese collectors drooling over their checkbooks than I want to know.

A riding buddy of mine gave me a Cyclone RD just like you describe, cmdr, it has no paint on the plate and it obviously never had any paint. Judging by the many pics of Cyclone RD's I've seen on this forum, this is apparently very unusual. But at least now we know our derailleurs aren't unique.
Btw, according to the component date codes on the vintage trek site, mine was made in 1974. Do you know the year of yours?

I think the ones without paint are earlier, but I don't know for certain. I have a Superbe with a '77 date code that also lacks the black background. Here's a Superbe similar to mine that recently sold on eBay - 'cept this one's NIB and a lot nicer:

The date code on mine is Q G, which should mean 1974, July according to the vintage trek site. It looks exactly like lotek's pic, except for the lack of paint and also the pulley wheels have no teeth, they're smooth-

That be it, cmdr. I wonder about the jockey wheels on mine being smooth, I notice yours have teeth. Maybe the wheels on mine are replacements, I don't know. I might ask my friend if he replaced them at some point-

do they say Suntour around the plastic pulley body or no? I suspect they might be Huret pulleys (with ball bearings) as replacements, but without pictures (hint) it's just a big guess.

Sorry, I've got to force myself to learn to post pics one of these days. You're probably right about these being Huret pulleys, they definitely don't say Suntour on them. In fact, at the same time my friend gave me the Cyclone RD, he also gave me a couple of Huret RD's, a Jubilee and a Duopar. But both of those derailleurs have toothed pulleys on them. Very nice stuff, regardless-

There are people like me that dislike logos and remove them. Paint stripper will remove the paint without a trace and it has no effect on the anodizing.

If you use Berryman Chemtool soak to clean parts it will strip the paint off like it was never there. I made that mistake with a Cyclone M-II. A 30 second soak, and it was a no name, lol.,,,,BD
