Merckx....Help me out.

I've just been notified of a second chance offer on an Eddy Merckx. The picture was pretty crappy but for some reason I really think it's a great looking bike. The description states that it's equipped with Campagnolo record through out. Nuovo or super I don't know. Can you guys take a look at the pic and give me an idea of what year and model it is? I've sent the seller an email already asking for better pics and for the info but I just can't wait. Also, what crank does it look like? Also, lets assume that the seller can't provide me with better pics; by this crappy photo, is the bike worth $270? I'm strongly leaning on picking up this baby tomorrow regardless of the size and then flipping it if it doesn't fit. (I'm a prick I know)

ok, few things here.
this 2nd chance did the email come from ebay? if it's an ebay auction
you should have the same email in your ebay messages, if not (and ebay)
beware of a scam.
if it's outside of ebay, I'd be careful, as in face to face sale.

as for the gruppo can't really tell from the photo.

Looks like late Super Record from what I can make out, at least the crank and rear derailleur.

Yeah brake levers look like later record/chorus but very difficult to tell. I'm with dbakl on the rest I would guess the seatpost and headset are super record as well, the front derailleur looks like later model campy and was probably upgraded.

Not that late, since the crankarm is fluted.

I saw the message on "My Messages" on ebay so I'm sure it's legit. Now, is it a good price if the bike is in good shape?

Agree that second-chance offers can be iffy. But it sounds like the OP can pick up the bike. Just pay at delivery and the chance of getting scammed is minimal.

Without having all the data, obviously, like for instance some good pics, I'd say the bike is well worth $270.

Never. That little guy is my pride and joy. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow and shall have pics of it posted here. Even though the second chance offer is legit, I feel that the auction was shady. There were two other bidders and both did not take it? I think they purposely made the price go up just to see where my highest bid was. Either way, I will see the bike tomorrow and check it out. If all is good, then I'll have a Merckx with which I have no clue to do with. If it's my size then I will have to sell one of my other rides. First one on the list is the Ventoux. Thanks guys for all your help. Now...get over to my other thread on the Godefroot! J/K Thanks again all of you. Thanks to this thread, I now have proof for the wife that it was you guys that made me spend my poker winnings on another bike.

One of these days that little guy may be really happy that dad spent his poker winning on such nice bikes! Tell your wife that East Hill says that it's better to have something in hand with those winnings, rather than having you recycle the winnings right back into somebody else's hand .

That's exactly what I tell her, but she would prefer that I spend my winnings on other things. Oh well, she knew how I was when we were in the states with my classic mustang and Malibu SS. I hope my son, when he is of age, will appreciate the bikes he and his sister will udoubtly get.

Just got home with it and it was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay worth the money. It has Super Record through out(from what I saw/compared at velobase.com) That site rocks. I'll post pics later.

Here are some quick pics I took of it just now. It's a 55cm...too small for me but might fit the wife. She'll have to decide between this Merckx or a Colango Extra light. If she picks the Colnago, I'm thinking of using all the parts for my Colnago. What model do you guys think it is. It looks like a Corsa like someone mentioned, but there is no sticker saying it is. Also, there is no tubing decal nor does it looks like it had any. Also, what's with that little thing on the top tube towards the front on the bottom? Tell me what you guys think. It should really look awesome once it's given a good wash and polish.

front derailleur looks like chorus, probably a performance upgrade, the brake levers also look like chorus/athena, it is possible they are the levers that were issued with cobalto brake sets but I would have to see a close up to be sure... but I'm pretty sure in my assessment. Very Nice catch, you should use the parts on your build and sell the frame... DOn't know how much you paid but you'll probably make money of the exchange and have gained a nearly complete super record group.

The thing on the top tube near the head tube is a number hanger. This was most likely a team race frame.
Go here to decipher your serial #'s. The owner of the site posts here under the name avenan, and is quite helpful, as well as knowledgeable.

Thanks for that info. Here are pics of both the derailleur and brake lever. What's with that little round thing on the top tube. What year and model do you think it is? I paid $272 with the conversion rate these days.
