Before and After Pug
Pug Rehab (or How to Turn $20 into a $300 spend)This is the before, during, and after of an unscheduled 30 day build. $20 CL purchase intended only to scavenge a few parts (butterfly wheelnuts and the rear rack). Guilt got the best of me, so this 1972 Peugeot AE8 was revisioned to a French Porteur. Included full rattle can repaint, decals; new, used, NOS, reused, and partsbin sourced parts; and rebuild of leather saddle. I got the wine box a few years ago from a friend who found it (damaged) in the garage of a cabin he bought. I repaired it then, with the for-thought of putting it on one of my other bikes. The wine box is from France 1962, complete with US customs stamp and French Line cruise ship luggage tags (dated july 4, 1963 with the name of the original cabin owner and his wife he brought from France in 1963). This unplanned build sought to repurpose the bike, but leave some of the pitting and scars of age and inherent quality imperfections of it’s Peugeot/Bike Boom ancestry. It all came together nicely in the end. Not perfect...just perfect enough. Rides wonderfully. Save the Pugs!

Thanks. Yes, my "brand" on the saddle, just for fun. Make a saddle bags once in a while (gifts and for practice). Saddle was a new experience.

I found this Nishiki laying in a ditch by the side of a country road. It had dry rotted tires and for all appearances, looked like it had fallen off a trailer where someone was cleaning out a garage or shed. After about a week, I took it home, put up signs. No one claimed it. New set of tires and fenders, threw on some spare trinkets, and viola! The price was right, and this thing has been bulletproof.

Full Dura Ace drivetrain, Ultegra-hubbed wheelset, Tektro brakes, and a lightweight Selle Italia Turbo saddle in lieu of my usual Brooks. All this comes in at 22.4 lbs - my lightest bike to date. And it rides beautifully. Exhilarating would be a good one-word description.

WV is not flat..
Finished up this little beauty today. Still having a little issue with the rear derailleur jumping around. A little play in the main bolt, but that’ll get worked out. Fun project.

A 1069 (or there abouts) PX10 frame that I am now building up, as posted on Ebay, and after some cleaning, touch-up, and new Nervex and Reynolds decals. All the Peugeot decals remain original:

Still my absolute favourite "Before & After" : Benotto Tandem. First picture as found for sale on Kijiji, with three wheels on a rural property in southern Ontario..
Paid $20 CDN (about $15 US). Seat posts were stubborn... but not impossible.
Very decent components and the Campagnolo forged drops were not damaged: Cinelli, Miche, Gardin, Campagnolo,
I unbolted the rear section and left it there on the farm, and found a good strong concave-profile Weinmann alloy rim for the rear to replace the caboose.

After over 4 years waiting its turn I finally got to my 1970 Raleigh Competition last week, took it for a 24 mile ride today. First outing on 32mm tires, still a little tweaking to do but it's is basically how I'd always planned for it to end up. As found, a lot of grime and rust to deal with, the decals were pretty much gone. Berthold bag and other bits were a nice plus.


After refurbish and refit. I decided to go French to the extent possible, bit of a mutt but I like it:

I've never seen the cable housing under the bottom bracket as in your before picture - was that not unusual, or was it regular practice with the Raleigh's? With the beautiful chromed lugs, I would have expected chromed cable guides low on the seat tube, or braised on guide tubes on the bottom bracket.

My "before" is actually not quite how I got the bike. The picture below shows a '91? Holdsworth Criterium which is not one of the "desirable" Holdsworths being from the production line era. The frame is Reynolds 531 though. It came in a "pearlescent pink" and arrived with me completely stock Shimano EX 400 minus brake calipers. Originally I was planning on giving it to my son so first took the original stock 20C? Contis off it (I kept them) and replaced them with some 25C Luganos (Yes cheap and cheerful.) This picture also shows that by this stage I had replaced the stock brown suede (I think it is real suede) Selle Italia "Vetta" with a Fizik Arione. Finally I've added a pair of SRAM Rival calipers. Bought it for £110 off ebay but seller local to me so I could collect it. It was in very good condition. Paintwork was not bad with only a nick or 2 here and there. A few tweaks adjusting the gears and brakes and it was ready to go. Was very strange to ride a bike with a 7 spd 11-23 cassette on the back. No granny gear on this. I went out with a small toolkit to test it out and adjust anything if needed. Here it is on that day of testing:

It rode like a dream and I fell in love with it instantly..............so my boy didn't get this.........He got my old bike frame with an SRAM Apex groupset on it and I transferred all my goodies onto this frame. Crazy I know. This frame and forks plus headset weighs 3kg. The alu frame/ carbon forks it replaced weighed 1.85kg. So now the Holdsworth above is mine, has been resprayed in Gloss Red because I hated the "pearlescent pink"and has been fully modernized:

It has Schwalbe Durano Plus on at the moment. I prefer Conti GP4kS2 tyres but have had 4 punctures with them this year so had to compromise. I ride this to work so can;t get that many punctures. It also has my "shop" pedals on it. Meaning pedals for normal shoes. I usually have some exustars on there if I'm going any kind of distance. The bike weighs in at a respectable 9.5kg.
Disclaimer: None of the vintage components included in the first picture have been harmed, damaged or disposed of in anyway. They have been used to upgrade an old Sun Solo.

Really excited to finish this one up, 73 Raleigh professional that received a 80s make over, received braze ons along with bottle mounts, kept campy shifters, then it had super maxy crank, shimano 600 rear ofmega front derailleurs, modolo flash brakeset, mavic g40 rims but kept campy hubs, cinelli bars stem and seat


Redid original paint schem, finished out campy driveline (shifters, derailuers, crankset bottom bracket) diacompe g500 brakeset, 3ttt stem and bars, relaced campy hubs into some new sun m13II, kept campy seat post added gyes seat and syn leather bar tape, finished off with some fenders.

'71 Gitane Super Corsa frame/fork build. I picked this up from a fellow BF member a couple of years ago and finally finished it late last year. I find myself enjoying this bike more and more.
