He's dead Jim

I am in mourning. Yesterday, as I prepared to tap the threads on the BB of my Miyata I noticed what I thought were small cracks in the paint around the internal cable routing on the Top tube. Upon closer inspection I found that it was not the paint but the actual tube that was cracked. Four little cracks radiating out from the routing hole...
I have spent a lot of time finagling housing through these holes. I thought that I would have noticed before now, just when I was upgrading to 9-speed. I took the news stoically. But inside I've been all torn up. This was my main ride, my baby.
I am sad and I needed to get it off my chest.
Thanks.

That was big problem on the 7-series. To remedy the problem Miyata re-inforced the holes. It was a running change versus a model year change.

Let me guess..a 712?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my (newest favorite) bike, an unreinforced 1987 912...

DAMMIT JIM! Im a Doctor not a frame builder! Sorry to hear about your frame :( I put my ProFlex away in deep storage as I dont want that to happen to my baby, I know it sucks not to ride it but I wouldnt be able to get a single orig part for it let alone a frame :( Its waiting on a new spot (as bike history/art) in a new home sometime in the future :)

i just lost one of my miyatas also. mine was due to poor decision making and an SUV, not a frame flaw, but it still hurts. i feel your pain, friend.

'Damn it Jim, what the hell's the matter with you? Other people have birthdays, why are we treating yours like a funeral?'

as I was sayiing when the system went south - That looks soooo much more Christmas-y than what I had up before. Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you!

Thank you all for your words of encouragement and condolence. The Miyata in question is a twelve-hundred. I am a little disappointed that it did not have reinforced cable routing. I guess for now it will be stripped down and the parts put on the Waterford Paramount (crossed fingers) that my soon to be brother-in-law said he would give to me. I guess that might be the hidden opportunity mentioned earlier. I will be moving in spring to Charlottesville where a friend of mines father is an ex-frame builder (Scott Paisley). Maybe he could braze in a new TT.
Thanks again.
Rob

Having broken a few frames over the years, I know how you feel.
