One of 2 Phillips completed

I'm really happy with how this bike turned out. it's a complete rebuild down to the wheels. New tires, tubes, rimstrips, cables. 1964 Phillips Sports model The identical matching ladies bike is on the rack right now and is getting the same treatment. Oxallic acid bath on all chrome, a light steel wool brushing to finish cleaning off the pock marks. My goal is to sell these 2 on the bay or our local CL site for 500-600 for the pair. I'd include some free local delivery. what do you guys think? This is the best riding 3speed I've ever ridden and the sound of that hub is just spectacular. Any tips for the ad. I'll probably take some pics this evening up in the park right when the light pops. I've also included a before pic.

I'd also love a intro on how to load pics hosted on another site so I don't have this thumbnail crap anymore.

aw, that's a beauty! there's been a green phillips haunting the dallas cl for a few months now. he started at $1500.00 i believe and is now down to $575.00 i think. three-speeds are a delight, i'd like to get a close look- which means own my own- phillips to compare to my raleighs. did the raleigh factory make phillips?

g-funk 12-07-07 06:47 PM

yep, it's a straight up sports model. the only difference besides the saddle is the phillips brakes which are way better due to the pinch bolt instead of the raleigh specific cables. what is funny about the pair is that some parts have the raleigh stamp and the same part on the other bike doesn't have it. and the head badges say birmingham while the stickers say nottingham.

Wow, that fender/mudguard closeup is lovely! I love the lion headbadge, and the fact that it's from Brum means one of my relatives could have had something to do with it's making.

Ok, photo tutorial.

Go to your hosting site. If it's like Photobucket, you'll see something that looks like this:

Click on the IMG code one, and it should turn yellow and say 'copied'.

I usually do a preview to make certain I haven't screwed it up :) .

Nice job cleaning them up. Why do you want to sell them after all that work? I think your price range might be a touch high. I saw two similar non-cleaned up but in otherwise good shape his & her early 60's Truimph's go for only $68 on 'bay a while back. I was glad they went for $68 because I was the previous high bidder at $65 & I needed 2 more 3 speeds like a hole in the head.

Quote from Sheldon Brown

Phillips
A division of B.C.C., Phillips, based in Birmingham, was the second-largest British bike maker until merged with Raleigh as part of the TI takeover in 1960. Raleigh-made Phillips models are near the bottom of the quality range.
Keep those beautiful bikes & enjoy them.

g-funk 12-08-07 07:22 PM

yeah, I know the price is a bit high, but my market is insane too. 2 black raleigh's went for 560.00 just a few days back on ebay and they weren't in anywhere near the condition that these are in. These bikes are built better than they were new from the factory, we'll see though. The reason I'm not keeping them is because the mens bike is too small, i have a 73 ltd-3 and a 63 sports, my wife already has a 3 speed world tourist. as far as Sheldon's site; that guy is a moron!!! no, I'm kidding. I've read that phrase before and I think that these bikes are low on the quality meter, so is every Raleigh Sports and Sprite and practically every other three speed. and Phillips are so much more elusive that Raleighs

I know that there are others that are priced lower for the pair but are they in the Bay Area? seriously bikes go for crazy loot here, but so do houses and burritos

Nice bikes.I am a big fan of the SturmeyArcher 3 speed.I presently have 45 of them. They have been undervalued for too long.Maybe their day is coming.People are willing to pay up to $1500 for reproductions so maybe $560 would seem like a deal for a pair of them. There's a part of me that hopes you get your asking price and there's a part of me that hopes you don't.I hope you get it because it would bring the values up accross the board.Did I mention I have 45?The reason I hope you don't get it is because it would bring the values up and make finding the deals harder.Did I mention I want more than 45!:)I've never paid more than $40 for a mint original needing no restoration.Keep those 3speeds rolling. There's nothing like the sound of a Sturmey Archer.

Wow, these bikes are beautiful and classic. Looks like they are ready for the beaches to me.

I'm from Swinton, in Lancashire, but me mum's side of the family are all Brummies :p . The men were gun makers and brass moulders (they made parts for guns), and the women worked for Cadbury's!

Yeah, Birmingham was, and is, a big industrial place. A lot of those names on the list are ever so familiar to me!
