1971 Raleigh Superbe
 

A friend gave this to me, knowing how I like to fix up bikes. The oldest one I have, I love the lock on the front fork. The frame is a lttle dirty, will clean up tomorrow. This may sound stupid, but do I have to disconnect the gear cable to fix a flat, never changed a flat on a 3 speed. I also have never seen a bke with so much Raleigh logos, there on almost every bolt head, pedals, brackets. Kind-a-cool though.

Hey pal,

I would strongly recommend disconnecting the cable before changing the flat rear. You could either disconnect at the barrel adjuster that's along the chainstay (first choice), or unscrew the indicator chain from the hub.

Looks like you have a bit of clean-up to do, but there's definitely good potential. I have a 1974 that's the same color. It's a size or two smaller, and was my uncle's. If you want any help with getting yours spiffed up, I should have time to help after the Holidays.

well the guy how gave me the bike came over this morning and wanted it back, he said he had second thoughts about giving it up. So, this is the end of this thread. CASE CLOSED>>>>>>>boo hooo

man i hate it when that happens. when i was a little kid a friend of my parents gave me an old fishing reel, no big deal, but to a little kid it was. the next day he comes over asks for it back. he died a few years later and i thought, "what good is that old fishing reel gonna do you now?" my memory of the guy is what a stingy *rick he was. is it worth it?

Wonder if he really wants it, or just thought he could sell it for a bunch of money. I suspect your friend has a knucklehead pal who told him his bike was worth a lot of money. :(

yes, i know i will pick up another, in my area i pick you close to 15-20 bikes a week. I don't know if i told you guys, but i collect bikes from the trash for March For Jesus, out of Enola, and he sends them to Gettysburg to Pedals for Progress. You would not beleive all the bikes I pick up everyday. I drive close to 25-30 daily looking for bikes being thrown out. I know for sure i will find another, but i liked this , it was unique

Look on the bright side. That bike wasn't a very good example of a Superbe. It was missing the original saddle, lighting system and luggage carrier. Those are the items that differentiate the Superbe from the Sporter. While I doubt you will ever find a Superbe, with all those items, in the trash, it shouldn't be hard to find a similar one.
