Charity bikes
 

Took these two to the Place of worship today to be given to the needy. They were in the alley a month or so ago and the usual hub adjustments and clean-up Tires may have even been okay just flat and falling off the rims. After a thorough inspection for Campy labels turned up negative ,I figured my attic was a bad place for them.

Those two bikes do indeed deserve to be recycled. At this time of the year, it may make all the difference in the world to a child.

I should really do more little bikes. The look on a kid's face taking the first ride is worth it. Besides, those two don't look like they take up much more room than a pair of skates.

Yeah Baby:D I picked up a Thrasher or a smasher or some kind of 20" bmx silver with yellow and black grips.Coasterbrake worked ,it was missing the clip but I rode it around the Church and got in under the wire of the Race to Donate.Sorry no pic.Thanks East Hill And Skull

Bikes are great gifts and it's amazing how much the kids who get these charity bikes really love them. This last weekend we gave away 26 new redline, specialized and cannondale bikes to less fortunate kids, this is an event that's dear to my heart.

I kind of sold out my C&V crew. the original plan was to rebuild old bikes and give them away. however I'm the only one with mechanic skills and I wasn't about to rebuild a ton of crappy bikes. besides what kid wouldn't be stoked with a brand new Redline! this year we gave away or repaired 70 bikes, pretty good for 13 guys who raise money by throwing parties!!!

I don't think it's going to adversely affect your karma points, g-funk.

Is this an organised thing, or how did you start doing this?

Our bike club does the fix up & give away thing every spring. The local Police Depts donate the bikes, 5-10 of us wrench some back to health with begged, borrowed, & stolen (from donor bikes:)) parts. One LBS donates tubes & a few inexpensive parts. Last year I think we gave away about 40 bikes. We like to give them away in spring.

We find it is also a nice opportunity to teach other club members to work on their own stuff. Usually we will pair up & teach the helper how to adjust derailleurs, brakes, & cables. Last year I taught one of the club members how to true a wheel well enough to get home.

Of course we get to sort through the bikes before work begins. Last year I found a Murray branded mtn bike with deore cantilever brakes, full touring braze-ons, & cast dropouts (but it had trashed steel wheels). It was a really nice frame with cheap decals. After a rebuild, a friend of mine is using it to tow his child trailer.

So, I guess we even give a little to ourselves.

I have been collecting bikes from the trash and yard sales for over 4 years ( roughly about 10-15 a week) I can' t even image how many I have picked up over the years ., I take them to a local church org. how fixes them up for their summer programs and then sends the rest to Pedals for Progress in Gettysburg, PA

One of my Festivus resolutions this year to give some of my bikes away to a good cause(s). I frequently come across bikes that could be usable but I are not really worth much money.

Any suggestions about how to go about doing that?

I'd look for local non-profit bike shops (bike kitchens) and service groups. Churches are also a good avenue, they do alot of good in spite of all the wars they start (bad joke). Also check the local boys and girls clubs.
