Drilled out to the max

Back in the 70's drilling out all the components on a bike became popular.Does anyone have a really drilled out bike they can post. I remember the Japaneese bike makers jumped on the bandwagon. I think Nishiki made a bike that had everything drilled out. I still like the look. It was when I was really getting into bikes and riding so I guess thats why I have a fondness for the drilled out bike. Post some pics of your bike or any bike with the drilled out look. Thanks.

No pics that I can find, but back in 1974-75 I raced a Zeus that was drilled out to the max:eek: I was very fortunate...I never had any components fail. I also was a very lightweight rider at the time, which I am sure helped.:p

'73 Italvega Superlight, came from the factory "drilled out to the max". Drilled cranks, rings, calipers, levers, milled and shortened seat post. Even the frame was worked over with two of the biggest BB shell cut-outs ever, and drilled drops. Came with Fiamme yellow's and was a true sub 20lb. (just) with no ti parts.

This one was a little too big for me so I sold it, but would love to have one in my size someday. Damn sexy bike!

Never seen drilled calipers, sweet!,,,,BD

I have a drill press in the garage. It's tempting, but I better practice on some cheaper stuff. Beveling the edge
of the holes would really set it off, hmmm.

divineAndbright 12-13-07 09:26 PM

I've yet to see someone drill a tiny hole in the middle of every single link of a chain...!

Didn't Wipperman make a ti chain with a hole in every link?

wethepeople 12-13-07 09:31 PM

KMC has one as well.

SRAM too on the hollow pin chains. In fact, I've got one on a mountain bike.

Even once you get to the point that you are good enough to tackle the "non-cheap stuff", you might think twice about riding it. I raced during the drillium era, and crit courses would glitter with broken bike parts at the end of a day. But it is pretty...

actually it's not that uncommon.in addition to SRAM and others already mentioned, regina's CX SL & America SL series were hollow pin designs. campagnolo's current record 10spd ultra chains have hollow pins & drilled sideplates

Wasn't this called drillium? Pretty funny that people took engineering into their own hands.

Picchio Special 12-14-07 05:49 AM

John Barron has a super-sweet drilled-out Paramount:

I have a friend who acquired a set of those same drillium parts.

the chain Eddy used for the hour record was drilled, along with most everything else on the bike.

Miyata went nuts on a bike awhile back. It was in the 12 lb range. My old boss was machinist and drilled some cranksets to the max.

piwonka 12-14-07 08:35 AM

someone on the CR list posted a link to pics of an old british time trialers bike. it looked pretty nuts. i forgot his name and i think i deleted the email too...showed a pic of drilled handlebars. pretty crazy.

I still have a 50T Sugino Mighty Victory chainring and a drilled 46T ring from that era. My 1980 Peugeot PKN-10 came with factory drilled 52 and 42T Stronglight chainrings. I drilled for large holes in the outer plate of a SunTour V derailleur -- does that count? When I worked at a bike shop, a kid drilled out a Campagnolo NR rear derailleur, which I think I still have in my parts bin.

I do like the look of the "relieved" Sugino spiders (see ozneddy's and marqueemoon's pictures, above).

I drilled a set of Weinmann 500s back in the 70s. The front lasted until the first stop!

piwonka 12-14-07 12:18 PM
