1 1/4 rim = 1 1/8 rim?

A thread below reminded me of a question I've been wondering about: I have two sets of 27" wheels with Araya alloy rims. One set is inscribed "27 X 1-1/4" and the other says "27 X 1-1/8." But I measured them a few weeks ago with a micrometer, and found that they actually seem to be identical in size. I did not remove the tires, so I didn't measure the interior rim width, but they were the same to the tenth of a millimeter on the outside. Does anyone here know why the inscribed markings state different sizes?

They are the same size. I replaced a front rim last summer and although they are marked different they indeed are the same size.
I measured the inside and outside dimensions. No difference.

The inscribed making indicates the recommended tire size.

So-called 27" rims are almost invariably 630mm in outer flange diameter, to accommodate tires of 27" outer diameter, 1-1/4" sidewall height, and variable width. One's sole concern is to match flange-to-flange rim width to tire width (see SheldonBrown.com for a good, though arguably overly safe and conservative, discussion), and to avoid using straight-walled rims at higher tire pressures.

Not exactly apples to apples, but I have a couple 559 rims. One is marked 26x1.50 and the other is 26x1.75. The latter is actually a hair "skinnier".

Interesting thread. It caught my interest because I have one set of UKAI, 1 1/8 rims and several other brands at 1 1/4. The UKAI are at least 1.4 mm narrower than any of my Araya or Weinmann 1 1/4 rims (I checked 6).

Maybe the guy at the Araya factory who marks the rims had a tough weekend?

I have a set of Araya rims and a set of Wienmann rims that are both marked 27x1 1/4". The Arayas are about 19mm wide, and the Wienmanns are 15mm. I have another set of Arayas with no size markings that are about 17mm.
