I tried the flush with WD-40 (which has worked wonders on other rapid fire controls that have been trouble) but in this case -- no help.
I had a pair of old shifters that I held in simmering water in a pot with a pair of tongs. I cooked out all the old dried up factory gunk and re-greased.......worked like a charm........

Whenever I do the WD-40 remedy, I always give it a few days for penetration and the solvent effect.

Always has worked for me. Maybe the best use of WD-40 on a bike. I saturate it and put it in a baggie for a while. Then flush it out again.
I would be careful with the boiling water trick. Pretty small nylon parts in there; I might be afraid to manipulate those little gears and cams in there while still hot, they might deform.

I use Liquid Wrench spray rather than WD-40.
Normal failure that I've seen is the little rocker pawl gets sticky and sticks open. Worth the effort to pull the cover (or fish around through the lever opening) and work the pawl a little with a hooked probe after a soak.
Works for me, and turned many a garage sale junker into a CL prize.

Carb cleaner, just make sure you remove all the outer plastic you can. And most of all, WEAR EYE PROTECTION! Shoot it up, and blow moderately with compressed air. Relube and good as new. I hate those little return pawls, lol. They are a complete PITA.,,,,BD

Is it too weird to respond to myself?
Anyway, just days after wistfully writing about my lost Tequestra, I lucked into one today. $15 off CL. Excellent shape, except the freewheel was all gummed up so it freewheeled in both directions. And exactly the right size: huge!

I love GT's, but don't know the model years at all. You have U-brakes though and that puts it around 1988 or so. GT stuck with them a few years after everyone else got over that craze.
I have an Outpost that I would guess is a year or two earlier than yours. It is a tank. I have it set up this winter as my snow bike. Studded tires and big fenders.

Here's my (not sure of date-maybe early 90s) Outpost Trail. This one was heavily modified. I bought it as as frame for $17. Pieced it together with bits from an old Raleigh M-40. Yes, that is a Rockshox Mag21 on the front, and I could kick myself for ever selling it! The bike is now down to a rolling chassis. Even though the 18" frame is way too small for me, I enjoyed riding it.

I was offered a GT Talera Pro for $100 recently. I think it's a 96 according to BikePedia. I passed but am thinking maybe I should see if he still has it. It's in pretty good shape. Thoughts?

I picked up this GT last spring off of CL. It had been in the extensive flooding of the Chehalis Valley.
The only model decal I can see is on the chainstay and it says Terra. IIRC, it has True Temper tubing. The rear dropouts have cool vertical axle adjusters and it has the Rock Shok fork similar to the one on geekrunners bike.

I've been using an ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight. Great product and all you need is a little dishwashing detergent and 10 - 20 minutes. I got the heated version.

mind me masking what a reasonable price for a Zaskar should be these days? I bought a Karakoram new in 1988 and I've picked up what looks like a mid '90s Karakoram (cool cable routing all through top tube, cantilevers front & rear, 24speed Deore if I recall) + an Agressor (maybe late '90s?, Diacomp V-brakes, ??? components,). The '88 was $800 or so (new, in the fall of '87) and I paid $65 & $50 for the other two this summer....but, of course none of these have the kickarse frame geometry AND aluminum....mine are all various forms of chromoly..

Figured I'd add my newly acquired GT Outpost to this thread. It's not the lightest, but it'll do well for my winter bruiser.
Thing rolls like a tank and I got it for a song + 50 bucks
Swapped bars, stem, added fenders, rack, seatpost and seat. Around 150 for everything seen. I'm pumped.
