After 3 days of fretting over what I should replace/upgrade, and what I need to buy to make this bike mine,


I finally arrived at my shopping list:

The bike cost me $70 and a few hours of cleaning and tuning, and the damage of my shopping cart is a bit over $200 for a total of less than $300 so far. Not too bad, because it feels like a very sweet ride! ☺☺☺

Now I am also thinking of replacing the 12-gear setup I have.
I counted 16-29 teeth on my 6 sprockets now, and would like to get the Shimano HG50 13-34 7-speed cassette.
I don't even know whether a have a free-wheel or free-hub setup. With other words, do I have to get a free-wheel cluster or can I go with a cassette?
Can someone tell from this pic?

I see nothing suggesting that that is anything but a freewheel hub. You will need a 6 speed freewheel cluster. You need to make sure that the rear derailleur can wrap the difference in teeth between the smallest and largests sprockets in the cluster you choose, taking into account the chainrings. If it turns out your existing derailleur is not up to the task, that is another item that can be upgraded.

The reason I was unsure is because of the bike's age. Cassettes became popular later. But when I saw the bulge on the right side of the axle I got confused, since https://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html says this indicates a free-hub.
If my current derailleur can't span 7 sprockets I may buy a new Shimano Altus.

You haven't shown us the drive side but it appears you have a long cage rear derailleur. If so, you should have no problem with wide range gears.

It looks to me like the shifter images are upside down, at least I would hope so. What do you think?
Also, is my thinking correct on this:
1. A derailleur can be set to match the steps of the shifter, but shifter increments can not be changed.
2. A shifter with more steps presents no problem for a lesser gear freewheel.
3. It is advisable to get a new chain with a new drive train.

(I have a Ci Deck plus on my mountain bike, and it works very well there!)
My Aero BL-R400 levers are already shipping, so they would be wasted, wouldn't they? Unless the V-brake levers can be mounted in line with them, like crosstop levers? That would give me good reach from either hand positions on the drop bars!

I think those images are shown correctly. The display looks properly placed. You push the rear-most lever with your thumb to upshift. You pull the upper lever with your index finger to down shift.

Look where the cable enters the shifter! The right shifter has the cable come in from the right, and the triggers are on the left side, so your right hand thumb can't reach it from the grip.

Here is my new to me univega.... its kind of a barn find so to speak the guy i got it from bought it for his son and as far as i know it hasnt seem to much riding since the mid 90's

Nice! I have a regular "Gran Sprint" and it's a great bike. I'm curious about the "Gran Sprint - S" model. What is the serial number / year on this?

Mine has the same frame (CTB frame, chromoly stays, mangalight fork) and what looks like the same Cyclone components. Mine doesn't have the aero brake levers, I wonder if those were stock or upgraded, or if there are any other differences between the models.

"Safari Ten" fixie commuter. This thing was towards the bottom of the spectrum for the brand, but it's a super comfortable frame that has held up to a fair amount of abuse.



"Gran Turismo" touring bike. It's a work in progress still. running 2x7 with a mess of heavily mismatched components. Works well, but I really want to get this thing back up to a triple. Anyone have any suggestions on a dirt cheap triple brifter... didn't think so.





"Nuovo Sport" single speed. I built this for my girlfriend, and I'd suppose it's technically hers.

Gran Rally. Not sure what year and I haven't checked any date codes but it most likely came with non-aero brake levers. The 600 bits look good and really work well. The cranks have the self extracting bolts. I don't think it was ridden much after the change to aero brakes.
