I just picked up a Gran Rally also. Post some pics if you get a chance. These are pretty nice bikes. The frame is probably triple-butted chro-moly. I really like all of the 600 components. Pics of mine are earlier in the thread, but here it is again. I had to replace the rear wheel and it doesn't quite match because of the machined brake surface, but this bike rides really well.

I just picked up this 1986 Gran Premio for $80. It has all Suntour Sprint components.
I am wondering where the Gran Premio falls in the Univega road bike hierarchy. Here are a couple of pictures. It hasn't been cleaned up at all yet. Thanks.

In 1985, I believe it was at the top of the high performance/triathlon bikes, not the race bikes. I kind of assume it still held the same spot in 1986. Very Nice bike!

Edit: Here's a thread with someone very knowledgeable saying it was third or fourth from the top. I believe that is because there a couple race bikes ahead of it such as Superspecial, Superstrada, and Competizion.

I have the 1985, which came with Superbe Ders and Cyclone everything else. I put a Superbe Pro rear der on it and changed the freewheel. It's just the right size for me. Very lively frame. Climbs like a mountain goat. Honestly the best road bike I've ever ridden. I get a little gitty just before each ride on it.

Great find for $80 ... I paid $200 and got a steal as far as I'm concerned. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Picked up this Univega Via Montega recently.

Trying to decide how to build up.

It's a 60cm C-T & 60cm TT as well. It's one of the largest hybrid bikes I have come across.

Sticker shows Tange double butted tubing.

I was guessing it is an early 90's model & it has a 91 at the end of the serial number
so perhaps that is the year.

None of the other info matched up on the bikepedia site and they do not list the earlier models.

Anyone know which hybrid was their top hybrid model? This or the Via De Oro model?


On bikepedia it shows they went to high tensile tubing on the last several years of this Via Montega model & lowered the prices considerably.

Ok...I just answered my own question going back to the bikepedia site.
The 1993 Via De Oro is listed at $625 & the 1993 Via Montega at $529. Tubing seems to be the same just better parts
on the Via De Oro.

The bike is way too small for me. I will be selling it this spring if my daughter doesn't want it. She probably won't since she already has a Basso, Bianchi and Raleigh Team Professional.

Here's my 1984 Univega Land Rover Sport; my uncle bought this new in '84 for his kids to use, but it just sat in the garage until he gave it to me in '95, and I've been riding the wheels off it ever since! Never broke anything, but I've worn a lot of parts out over the years. Finally wore out the original wheels and hubs, and decided to overhaul/upgrade it to fatbike specs with a set of Large Marge wheels and a modified rear frame to accomodate them (I do a lot of welding and machining for a living). My son matched up the original red with a two-stage powdercoat ("Lollipop Red"), and even got a company who reproduces bicycle decals to do a Land Rover Sport set for me, so once I have the frame fully sorted out, I'll have it refinished, although the black primer look isn't that bad, either. I ride this thing year 'round: to the beach, into town, on the trails, and even on the snowmobile trails after they get groomed. A lot of nice places to ride and explore here in southern Maine!

got this supra sport a while back at the salvation army. it was pretty dirty looking and sat there almost the whole winter. finally, i grabbed it for $20 (i miss those days!). it was in perfect shape after cleaning. i ended up selling it to make room for something different.enjoy.

Hey, guys. It may have gotten lost somewhere in this thread, but around what year did they switch the brand logo up? I'm probably going to be picking this frame up tomorrow for $30. I should have everything laying around needed to build her up minus a brakeset, guides, and a seatpost. Looks late 70's? Gran Turismo.

I picked up a couple of Univega frames last summer for $50 apiece (included a ton of random parts and a wheelset too). I converted the Gran Premio into a 650b rando-style bike, and the Gran Turismo I turned into more of a Rivendell style bike. I just love the Gran Premio, it rides like a dream, however, the Tourismo isn't much fun to ride. Maybe it's just the setup with the Albatross bars but the handling/steering is pretty twitchy and unstable.

Can anyone help me place the year on the Gran Premio? Serial# M562004. Suntour Symmetric shifters

Oh this is cool 'cause I had a light blue one in the early eighties for awhile until I put together a Trek 970 and sold it. My first road bike was a used Italvega that was just a little too short for me. I parted it out like a fool and I wish I'd have kept them ALL !!

Yea, that was a sweet bike, very clean. It was too small for me and I sold it at the Westminster swap meet. A girl bought it as soon as I unloaded it off of the truck. She loved it.

Well it was pink too, lol. The Shimano 600 parts on the Gran Rally are great mid priced stuff. It's what I have on my current Trek 500 and I don't see any need for better. Good range of chainrings for those back then. The bike handled well. Pretty low slung Bottom Bracket and comfortable for long hauls.

99 percent sure yours is an 84. They came with symmetric shifters in 1984. Also, I have a 1985 Gran Premio and its serial starts with N.

I love mine as well. Absolutely a wonderful ride. Quick and lively, climbs like a billy goat. Mine is a 53cm frame. Yours must be at least a 60cm? Did yours come with the Cyclone MK-II ders? If so, it's def. an 84. I think I have a magazine review of the 1984, which I will try to scan. Mine came with Superbe components, which are great but less versatile (ie no fat-man 12-30 touring freewheels, 25 max).

The 650bs are cool! Seem to make it more into an all-rounder.
