Finished the rehab', seems to have been lightly used. Still had the Univega branded tires. Bike tires direct had a sale on Kenda K40's for $8...ended up with 10. They are almost a perfect match for the originals. JENSON had the Cane Creek hoods on sale for $7. They have both brown and black.Tried to save everything else, along with faux suede tape. Comes in at 28 pounds. Nice riding bike.

That's great looking. Ben used to make some nice bikes.

$100 CL univega safari 10

Is $100 a good deal? Paint looks ok. The rear dr is disconnected. Looking for another single speed project and thinking older Japanese frame

The Safari 10 was Univega's bottom of the line, adult, lightweight model during the early 1980s. The ones I've seen have been far from light weight, with hi-tensile steel frames, 27" steel rims laced to steel hubs and a steel, cottered crankset. Even the handlebars were steel.

Personally, I wouldn't pay $100 for this as a S/S project. If you're going to be using most of the parts, you are going to end up with something very heavy. If you're only after the frame, you still have a heavy base and negligible resale value on the major components.

Thank you! There is a Nishiki on there for $75 too...I will do research on that. I know these manufacturers are like all others with some really cool models and some mediocre ones.

I'm working on a Gran Turismo very similar to this, but not in as good of shape. It's cleaned up pretty well, though. I was surprised by the relative lightness of it...didn't really expect that.

The frame was made in 1980 (leading "I"). It may have been a 1980 or a 1981 model.

EDIT: I'm sure you know, but the Super Strada was either the top or one of the top two models made by Univega in that era. This should be a great frame to build up.

Tradearcher's Super Strada is definitely a 1981 model. This is established by both the very high sequential frame number and the presence of a top mount shift lever boss. The shift levers may be the most difficult item to procure for the rebuild.

He can have the SunTour symmetric that I pulled off my '84 Uni or the other set (Cyclone?) that I pulled off my '86 Miyata 710 when I swapped to barcons on both bikes.

As a side note, has anyone else run into a problem with accessing catalog pages on the miyatacatalogs.com site? All I get is a small red dot in the center of the screen...

Might be a glitch in the Blogger system. I can view the full sized images when I right click on the thumbnails and select open link in new tab. But Blogger's built-in image slideshow/previewer isn't working at the moment.

Here's a '84 Super Strada on ebay, it ends in a day and a half. Pics aren't great but it looks mint. Full Dura Ace down to the seatpost and stem.

The OEM AX pedals have been replaced with more modern SPD versions.

Yes. As T-Mar noted, with the high numbers after the L, it was made later in the year, and is likely a 1984 model. That's one of the years that has a catalog available online (here). Page 5 shows the Superstrada and page 11 shows the original component list.

I'm looking at a Univega Alpina Trail (26" ATB, frame stickers say Triple Butted) but I can't find any real info online about the model. Anyone have any info about where this model fits in the hierarchy? What years it was offered? Trying to decide if it might be a worthwhile frame for a gravel trail bike or if it would just be a heavy bike I'd likely regret getting.

It's going to be heavy compared to modern bikes, probably 28+ pounds, but it'll make a great gravel bike. Pictures help for identification of quality/year.

Base your decision on what components are on the bike. If the components are original and low end, then its a low end model. If the components are high end and original, then its a higher end model. Regardless, it will be on the heavy side. (My guess is this bike is lower end.)

Marketing brands (brands that did not make bikes) usually have less information on line than the manufacturers that actually made the bikes. Univega's MTB and ATB product lines were typically NOT made by Miyata. I had a 1987 Alpina Pro, top of the line, made in Taiwan.

On MTBs and ATBs, I really don't sweat where it fit in the product line, as many models the main difference was the components. So I just look at those. Typically, a MTB with higher end components will sell at the value of the crankset and derailleurs. The rest of the bike is "free". Picked up a higher end MTB a couple of days ago at the value of the thumb shifters. I would expect a vintage ATB to have a pretty low value. So if you need a bike, they can be an excellent bargain. If you are doing it to flip, keep moving.
