Completely Original 1983 Gran Tourismo - Selling
Hi Everyone!
First I have to say that this thread has been amazing! I’ve learned so much about my beautiful Miyata-built Gran Tourismo here!
I’ve had it for 4 years now, and a new baby has crushed my pipe dreams of touring highway 1 on it, so, I want to pass this beauty on to someone who will love it and actually ride it 😊.
It is a 1983 Gran Tourismo built by Miyata, and is the same exact bike with the same exact components as the Miyata 610. It is completely original and in near-perfect condition. It has the original Univega water bottles and the original Selle Italia seat, it even has the original tires that still hold air and have plenty on tread! It was garaged it’s entire life. The paint is near perfect other than a small scratch on the top tube, and it has a bit of white spray paint overspray on a pedal (it was in a garage!)
i want to pass it on for the same price I bought it for, $350. I will even throw in a vintage 1982 Cannondale
handlebar bag that is also in perfect condition! I can deliver locally in Southern California, but can’t ship because I don’t want it lost or scratched. I’m also going to post this in the marketplace but wanted Univega fans to have first dibs.

One does need to be a paying/premium member, and there is a for sale section within C&V (at the top of the page just before all the sticky'd and discussion forums. No advertising elsewhere
That being said...holy smokes, @chico81 do you have a gem of a touring bike!! The paint! The decals! The water bottles with the decals! The fact that it is a 25" frame which is my size! I am in love.
Bonus features for a 1983 touring bike that even the Miyata 1000 was slow to adopt: three bottle cage bosses and mid-fork low-rider mounts. Cannondale, starting in 1983 (their first year producing bikes) with their touring ST model, had all these things, but very few others did. Super cool in my book. The canti brakes are there, the triple crankset is there, the Miyata-copy chain stay loop/guard is there, the sweet Mountech derailleurs are on it. Man, I wouldn't change a thing on it. Anyway, I'm totally fan-girl'ing it over here (and I've never owned one! Just wanted to. Owned a few Miyatas = excellent) even though I am far away and have no space for it, but like a number of us, I/we would be giving it a proper home, indoors (aka my apartment unit), warm, dry, everything overhauled and polished up.
If you don't end up selling it, keep it around for when your kid grows up. Trailer towing and then slow rides around the neighborhood or a park. Plenty of opportunities to ride it. Heck, being in SoCal, it's still warm there. Parents take kids for car rides to help them go to sleep, maybe bike rides (see: trailer, with appropriate seating and safety setup). Though nothing soothes the soul of anyone young or old like the sweet sound and motion of a V8.

thanks for the kind words, and I totally fangirled on it too! Haha! It is such a beautiful bike, it is like time traveling back to 1983, I imagine riding this to Return of the Jedi!
I totally love your idea of the bike trailer for the little one, and have been looking for one online. Unfortunately, I can use the cash and the space selling this bike will provide. I also would love to pass this on to someone who would love and ride it, as I have only taken it out on a few rides and just ogle it as it sits on my garage wall...

I saw this 1985 Ital Sport on the local craigs with a full campy triomphe group (except for the pedals and seatpost). Too small, but I had to have it. I had never owned late '80s campy before. It always intrigued me. This was a way I could acquire the group on the cheap.
So I got the bike, removed it all, and started shopping for a 56cm to build with it. In the meantime, the too-small univega frame was sitting around looking all pretty and red. And I had just come across a shimano tri-color mini group. Cool, but not my thing. Hmm, I thought, this Ital Sport will become a Japa Sport. And it did.
I feel a little guilt for the name -- staring at me, right there on the top tube -- "Ital." But I hear Ben Lawee put suntour on the motobécanes he imported, so maybe he'd understand. I dunno. He might hate the fact I drilled the brake bridge to fit the recessed nut of the 6400 dual-pivot. But the feel of these brakes in action (vs the original triomphe set) would probably be enough to persuade anyone.

Anyone know what the two, one-letter decals underneath the bb shell on each side of the serial of Miyata frames signify? A different bike than the one above reads "G" and "A."

I've always assumed the two stickers on the shell were inspection status indicators but have no objective evidence to back up that view.

I seem to be on a Univega jag lately .
Here is the latest , A GranTech6400 Bonded Aluminum frame with cromo forks and stays. Very similar to the Vitus 979 Aluminum framed bike I just finished. The Cromo brought the weight up from just under 20 lbs for the 58 cm all campy super Record Vitus to 23.3 lbs for the 57 cm Shimano 600 tricolor Univega.

Was in a local thrift store and saw this 1986 Univega for 40 dollars, without a saddle or post. Almost passed it up because it isn't my size, but then saw it was half price day for sporting goods. So I grabbed it for 20. Added a saddle and post that I had on hand, cleaned it, and lubricated the chain and freewheel. Will save it for someone! May swap the tires for Paselas, but will wait and see who is going to use this, and how, before I do that.....

Was in a local thrift store and saw this 1986 Univega for 40 dollars, without a saddle or post. Almost passed it up because it isn't my size, but then saw it was half price day for sporting goods. So I grabbed it for 20. Added a saddle and post that I had on hand, cleaned it, and lubricated the chain and freewheel. Will save it for someone! May swap the tires for Paselas, but will wait and see who is going to use this, and how, before I do that.....

I picked up this 1985 Gran Rally today. I couldn't find much info on 1985 model so I took a few close-ups. The paint is really something in person---very deep plum. I thought it was black at first. The triple butted tubing is a smooth ride. Set me back $100 too.

Lovely! And you got it today? Looks like the PO got it ready to ride with new stem, hoods, and bar tape, and then gave it to you to ride. Nice.
