Fiamme Yellow unferrelled clincher rims?

Anyone know these? Do modern tires fit and stay on? Got a pair I want to use and build but don't want the problems I've had with blowoffs on the old Weinmanns.

Yes, that sounds like the Fiamme model 71. Stick to tires with steel beads, not too narrow (28-35mm) and not too high a pressure (i.e. 90 psi or less) and you should be fine.

yes are those the 27" ones ?

I have an NOS pair in 700C (waiting for when I finally find a nice old Bottecchia Special as they were original on my old bike) - they are definately old school with straight walls. My originals back in the day were shod with Clement clinchers, wire bead in 27 x 1 1/4, rated at 100psi and not knowing any better back then that's what I pumped them up to. Never had any problems. When the Clements wore out I couldn't find any more 27 x 1 1/4 that were rate to 100psi and I believe I ran 27 x 1 1/8 at 90psi after that.

I would have run them at 100psi too, if I had a set, but tires of that size and pressure rating were rare back then. There would have been no reason to run them at less than rated. The tire construction, in conjuction with the rim, dictates the maximum pressure. The tire manufacturer would have performed the necessary testing to ensure blow-offs were not a problem with the intended rim style, at the maiximum rated pressure. Problems usually occur when the tire pressure exceeds the maximum, the tire is too wide or narrow for the rim and/or the bead construction is not compatible with the rim style. Every so often there will also be a quality control related problem whereby the tire bead diameter is too big for the rim bead seat diameter or the bead or rim wall is deformed. My original post would have been more accurate had I stated not to exceed the maximum tire pressure rating.

Yes they were. Nearly all the rest were rated at 75psi. Too bad 'cause those old Clements were really nice. Those tires on the Fiamme rims probably had a lot to do with my old Special seeming like such a nice ride. That and nostalgia
