Thinking about my Colnago
 

So I've been thinking about un-converting my Colnago from SS back to geared.

I have almost everything I need to do it. I need a spoke for the rear wheel, and I need a freewheel. They shouldn't be too hard to track down. I'll also need a freewheel removal tool to get the SS freewheel off.

I've got a C-Record RD, Super Record FD, & C-Record Retrofriction shifters. I also have a section of chain to add to the current chain to make it long enough, or I could simply replace it with one of the new chains I bought over the summer.

This should make for a good project over the next couple of weeks.

I had been thinking about stripping the parts off of the Vitus and swapping them onto the Colnago, but I can't get my mind to allow me to put Shimano parts on the Colnago. Another option I considered was to strip the Ergo parts off of the Eddy and put them on the Colnago. Then put the Shimano STI stuff onto the Eddy, leaving the Vitus as wall art. Or I could put the Campy friction stuff on the Vitus. Hmmm, choices, choices.

I'll let y'all know what I decide, and post pics when finished.

If it makes it any easier, a 7-Eleven frame with Campy equipment looks weird to me -- it doesn't look right unless its sporting DA 7400 series components.

It'll be a whole lot cheaper for me to leave it as is than to track down old DA parts. Although, all I'll need are brifters, FD & RD. I suppose I'd need hubs/wheels, too, but I'm not that concerned about that aspect. Oh, and a headset. I've already got cranks, brake calipers & stem.

are the brakes and hubs, cranks, etc... on it campagnolo?
if so, you might as well just slap the record back on.

or errmm... send the parts to me.

I'm just trying to be an enabler, thats all. I'm not a big stickler for whats right + wrong on someone else's bike.

That being said, I do know someone with a nice 7402 cassette rear wheel they'd be willing to trade for...

Initially I had Record Delta calipers, Croce d'Aune cranks, and a C-Record FD on it, but those went to the Eddy when I built it up.

If you need a freewheel fairly certain I have a spare 6speed around here, might have been the one I bought off you actually... I think I bought a freewheel off you... humm... in any case, let me know.

Yeah, you bought a Regina 7-speed aluminum FW from me. I remembered that as I was thinking about what I needed to do this. Not sure I want to use aluminum cogs, though. I'm thinking about trying to pick up an 8-speed Shimano compatible FW that I can swap with the 7-speed Sachs Aris FW that's on the wheels on the Eddy.

Finally, someone with some sense. :)

I forgot to mention, I recently completed building up a SS MTB. I see no need to have two SS bikes right now.

I think my spare is actually a 6sp (dura-ace I think), the 7sp I picked up off you is on my Campy/Mavic tubular wheelset.

I picked up an 8-speed Shimano compatible freewheel on ebay the other day. So I can swap it with the 7-speed Sachs Aris I've got on the Eddy.

Yesterday I pulled out the C-Record RD, Super Record FD, and Retro Friction shifters and spent some time cleaning and polishing them. I then installed the RD and shifters on the Colnago. I still need a FW removal tool, a spoke, and shifter cables to be able to complete the refit.

Perfectly sensible, that. I have ridden one off and on for years. Good for penance. You can't outrun the horseflies biting you on the butt.

Just finished up the de-conversion tonight. Picked up some der. cables from Performance, and traded an 8-speed freewheel for a 6-speed at my friend's shop. Haven't gotten a chance to ride it yet, and it's too dark to take pics right now. As soon as I get a chance to take them, I'll post them.

I re-labeled my red recumbent trike with Ferrari logos, so I had to lose the 105 rear deraileur in favor of a Record Carbon w/Bullseye pulleys! :rolleyes:
Lost the use of indexing, but hey, I'm an old friction shifter from way back, so, NOT a problem.
I also added a (red) Campy QR cover to the still in use Shi*mano bar end shifter. :roflmao:

My Oldnago is Super Record equipped, except for ....Mavic headset, Phil BB, Bullseye hubs & NR brake levers. (I like smooth, rather than drilled) But NO Shi*mano anywhere. :p

When I initially built it up back in late '89/early '90, I did my best to do it both as cheaply as possible, and without the use of Shimano. I succeeded on both counts. I got deals on everything, and the only Japanese parts on it are the brakes (and possibly the Ritchey seatpost, not sure where that's manufactured). And maybe the seat. It's got a Specialized seat on it.

Welcome back to the dark,dark side..... your bike will be faster and more enjoyable to ride now. :D

And don't use that Vitus for art, ride it! Campy friction group would be sweet on it....
