They were available in 1988. I believe that was also their year of introduction.

I have a set of these, maybe I will try them out and start using them on more bike since they are so abundant.

I saw a pair for sale at the UBC bike kitchen and since I already have look pedals on my road bike, I was thinking these would be a good option for a track bike I'm planning. Any thoughts?

Those look like first generation pedals, around 1985. The first models I think were called PP56 and PP66 and I think the red ones were the 66 and the black ones were 56.
A few years later they came out with a carbon grabber and a more rounded body and they called them PP76 - that was my first set of clipless (1988) and I still have them but don't use them. I've broken a few pedal spindles - they see hard service and when they go you can hit the road hard. Pedals are something I just don't buy used.
