27" Wheel/Hub question

I have a 25' Voyageur I am funnin with. This is not going to be a serious rider, more likely just dressed up nice to ride around the neighorhood.

I pulled the cassette, which is in good shape, and I am down to the freehub, which I need to rehab. Its a Shimano VIA as stamped on the hub. 6 speed cassette.

Harris bike has some 27 inch wheels already done for about 100 bucks with nice new stainless spokes, but with a thread on for a freewheel, not hub. They have new 6 speed freewheels.

The original derailler is trash, so I need to get a new one which will be in friction mode. So......

Clean up the originals and service the hub, shine the rims and live with the ugly spokes that are starting to rust up or move up the Harris product? Seems to me I am going to spend too much time futzing with the old. Not that it has stopped me before, but I always feel sort of dumb spending more hours polishing old turds than just replacing stuff. BTW, the cassette is the old gold set for those who remember or care.

Get the Harris wheels they are alloy and will help the bike stop much more safely

Me, I like to futz and would get new spokes and a suitable alloy rim and rebuild.

You can really shine up the hub while despoked.

I noticed that the spokes of a good grade are a buck a piece. that makes 36 bucks a rim plus the shop payment for truing it. Ouch.

To do it cheaply you kind of have to watch eBay and sales. For my '81 World Sport I bought 27" Sun rims from Nashbar on sale at $10 a piece and sat down with Spocalc and figured out that a single spoke length box of 100 (14/15 db) available on eBay for ~ $15 shipped gave me 1X front wheels and 2X rear.

Right now boberful on eBay has lots of 150 spoke boxes in lengths that could be suitable for 36 spoke 27" builds.
